A 31-year-old man in Texas is accused of posing as a good Samaritan, offering roadside assistance to a woman whose tire had blown out, only to then kidnap and sexually assault her in the parking lot of his apartment complex.
Reynaldo Tapia-Arcibar was taken into custody on Thursday and charged with one count of aggravated kidnapping – sexual abuse, court records reviewed by Law&Crime show.
Under Texas state law, aggravated kidnapping is a first-degree felony that carries a maximum sentence of life in prison as well as a fine of up to $10,000.
According to a probable cause affidavit from the Austin Police Department, officers at about 3:25 a.m. on Thursday, May 16, 2024, responded to a call for help from a woman in distress at the Wildwood Apartments in the 7000 block of Cameron Road in Austin. Police wrote that the female victim who called in could be heard “screaming for help.”
Upon arriving at the scene about 10 minutes later, first responders located the victim, who said that Tapia-Arcibar had already fled the scene.
In an interview with police, the victim said she had left her residence at about 1:35 a.m. in her car when suddenly, one of her tires blew out. She called for roadside assistance and said she was waiting for over an hour when a “boxy” white SUV pulled over and the driver — later identified as Tapia-Arcibar — offered to assist her with her vehicle.
The victim said that Tapia-Arcibar told her to wait in the passenger seat of his car and promised to take her to get a new tire before he “shut the door quickly” behind her.
A short while after Tapia-Arcibar allegedly started driving, the victim said she requested that he take her back to her vehicle. She said she tried to open the door but it was locked. The victim at 3:18 a.m. even sent a friend a text message noting her location and requesting help.
After driving for about five minutes, Tapia-Arcibar pulled into the Wildwood Apartments parking lot where he allegedly sexually assaulted the victim.
The victim said she attempted to call 911 and was able to fight her way out of the vehicle, police said. She then began running and yelling for help.
Though Tapia-Arcibar had fled the scene by the time police arrived, but later that day, officers in the area spotted Tapia-Arcibar and the “boxy” white SUV at the same apartment complex. He was taken into custody at 7:02 p.m. and transported to the Travis County Jail for booking, jail records show. He is currently being held in detention in lieu of $50,000 bond.
Should he post bond, a judge ordered that Tapia-Arcibar wear a GPS tracking device and have no contact with the alleged victim.
Police noted in the affidavit that white SUV in question was registered under Tapia-Arcibar’s name at an residence in the Wildwood Apartments.
Tapia-Arcibar is currently scheduled to appear in Travis County District Court on the morning of June 12.
