On Sunday, Florida Senator Marco Rubio, a Republican, declined to comment on whether he would recognize the results of the 2024 election.
Additionally, Rubio adopted an extreme right-wing position on immigration, whereas previously he was regarded as a moderate who sought a bipartisan resolution, as The Daily Mail reported.
Rubio’s positions on both issues coincide with Donald Trump’s public speculation regarding his suitability as a vice presidential candidate. His statements align him more closely with the presumed presidential nominee as Trump continues to consider his running mate.
The Exchange
“Will you accept the election results of 2024 no matter what happens, senator?” Meet the Press moderator Kirsten Welker asked Rubio on Sunday.
“No matter what happens? No, if it’s an unfair election I think it’s going to be contested by either side,” Rubio said.
“No matter who wins,” Welker clarified. However, Rubio asserted that what had fostered distrust in the elections were the Democrats themselves.
“The Democrats are the ones that have opposed every Republican victory since 2000,” Rubio said.
Rubio’s Concerns
Rubio launched into a rant in which he criticized Hillary Clinton for claiming that the 2016 election was hijacked, despite the fact that Clinton ultimately conceded the victory to Trump in a public address.
In addition to becoming impassioned, the Florida senator raised his voice and inquired whether Welker had ever questioned a Democrat on the program regarding the possibility that the election was rigged.
Trump maintains his unsubstantiated assertion that he won the 2020 presidential election, a claim that his campaign has neglected to substantiate in court.
Rubio did cast a vote in Congress to certify the 2020 election results in 2021. He informed Welker that he had exhausted all other possibilities at that juncture of the procedure.
More Questions
Rubio was also queried regarding Trump’s reelection-related strategy to construct migrant detention centers, mobilize the military, and execute the most extensive mass deportation of undocumented immigrants in the history of the United States.
According to Rubio, the potential number of individuals apprehended and expelled from the nation exceeds 20 million.
“The answer to your question is yes. We cannot absorb 25, 30 million people who entered this country illegally,” Rubio stated emphatically.
“They’re here illegally. What country on earth would tolerate that?” Rubio said. ‘We don’t even know who most of these people are.’
