The New York Times has been flogging its own story that Justice Sam Alito had a “Stop the Steal” flag flying outside his house after the 2020 Election. On closer examination, it seems the Times made the whole thing up. An upside down flag has always been a signal of distress. The idea that it was a secret symbol of “Stop the Steal” has zero support, zero evidence, zero examples of any “Stop the Steal” believers using it.
The Times loaded up its false claims with links, giving the impression that it had gobs of proof, but when you click on those links, they have nothing to do with the Times’s assertions.
Apparently, the Times’s only “source” is a lefty PhD student at Univ. of Colorado Boulder — but I repeat myself — whose entire oeuvre is about right-wing hate movements.
Here’s the Times’ first hair-on-fire story, by Jodi Kantor last week:
Wow, the Times has loads of links in that paragraph. They must have all kinds of proof that the upside down flag is a symbol of “Stop the Steal”!
Here’s what the links actually link to:
— “social media” — a Twitter post the day of Biden’s inauguration having nothing to do with “Stop the Steal”:
— “posts” – Again, nothing about “Stop the Steal” —
One guy saying, “I need to go buy a flag just so I can fly it upside down.”
Followed by commenters saying:
“turning your flag upside down doesn’t make you Australian”
”>Turning the American flag upside down is a sign of white supremacy!
>Stay tuned for your next nightly segment of NBC, where we’ll be discussing the intricacies of hormone therapy for children!”
”This is the faggiest shit I’ve ever had the displeasure of seeing on this board.”
— “exhorted” – a post days before Biden’s inauguration, saying he lied cheated and stole his way to the White House, which could refer to the suppression of Hunter Biden’s laptop, the Russian investigation or the withholding the COVID vaccine. But nothing about “Stop the Steal.”
Also something about Prozac and the Congo.
— “flip over” – completely wrong date. Post by Juanita Broaddrick (the one raped by Clinton) long after Biden’s inauguration — and long after the upside down flag flew outside Alito’s house — on Sept. 10, 2021 — the day Biden mandated COVID vaccines for about 100 million Americans. Broaddrick notes that an upside down U.S. flag signifies “distress or danger,” and adds, “I think we are there.”
First reply says “”Juanita, such an act is uncalled for.”
— “purchase” – Again, wrong date: September 2021. This links to a Twitter post that is literally an ad for flags, beginning with the claim that the J6 crowd was full of “undercover feds.”
In the Times’ follow-up article this week, really nailing down that an upside down flag was absolutely, 100% a symbol of the “Stop the Steal” campaign immediately after the 2020 Election, the paper cites — AGAIN — as its sole source … Alex Newhouse, PhD student, Univ. of Colorado Boulder.
In fact, it’s so common, the Times can’t find a single other source for it apart from Alex Newhouse, PhD student, Univ. of Colorado Boulder.
The Times’s hysterical promotion of its own invented story that Justice Alito had a “Stop the Steal” flag flying outside his house seems to rest entirely on the shoulders of this one PhD student.
Here’s a partial bio for Alex Newhouse. He doesn’t seem obsessed at all:
