Having watched previous interviews and hearings with attorney Bob Costello, I was hoping Trump’s defense would call him.
Well, they did, and it was like the Fourth of July fireworks show in the courtroom.
Costello and Judge Merchan got into it not long after Costello took the stand, which led to Merchan clearing the courtroom so he could ream Costello on the witness stand.
Don’t Look at Me!
Merchan gave the defense zero latitude with Costello on the stand, showing just how biased he was in this case.
After allowing Stormy Daniels to give up salacious details about her alleged affair and then allowing Michael Cohen to blatantly lie on the stand, Merchan upheld objection after objection by the prosecution when the defense was questioning Costello.
There were times when the defense attorney barely got a few words into the question when prosecutors objected and Merchan sustained the objection.
This led to Costello muttering under his breath, saying things such as “ridiculous” and “jeez.”
Merchan then lost it, stating, “You don’t say ‘jeez,’ and you don’t say ‘strike it,’ because I’m the only one who can strike … you don’t roll your eyes, do you understand that?
“Do you understand that? Are you staring me down right now? Clear the courtroom please!”
After the courtroom was cleared, Costello then got a lecture from Merchan, “Mr. Costello … I’d like to discuss proper decorum in my courtroom. As a witness on the stand, if you don’t like my ruling, you don’t say ‘jeez!’ and then you don’t say, ‘strike it’ because I’m the only one who can strike testimony in the court. If you don’t like my ruling, you don’t give my side eye or roll your eyes.”
This was not a good look for Merchan, but it does give the Trump defense even more to use if they have to take this case to the appellate court.
Honestly, even with a jury that was likely leaning into a guilty verdict from the start, I just cannot imagine that 12 people will vote “guilty” after the events that have taken place over the last week or so in that courtroom.
