Independent Presidential Candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. says that he has met the criteria necessary to participate in one of the upcoming presidential debates.Â
Kennedy made the claim during an appearance, over the weekend, on the Fox News Channel’s Sunday Morning Futures.Â
His appearance comes after President Joe Biden, out of nowhere, suddenly agreed to debate former President Donald Trump – despite the fact that Biden and the White House had spent months trying to avoid any debates with Trump.
The big question has been whether Kennedy – whom polls would suggest could have a big impact on the upcoming election – would be allowed to participate. The answer, at the time of this writing, remains unclear. But, Kennedy is certainly trying to make it happen.
Kennedy claims he qualifies
During his Fox News appearance, Kennedy claimed that he had met all the requirements necessary to participate in the presidential debate that will be hosted by CNN.
“CNN published a list of criteria for candidates getting in, and we have shown CNN that we meet all of those criteria and that President Trump and President Biden cannot meet those criteria,” Kennedy said.
He went on to explain what he meant, saying:
One of the two key criteria, is that every candidate has be on ballots in enough states to get 270 electoral votes by June 20, and we will qualify for that. President Trump and President Biden cannot qualify for that because they don’t have any electoral votes at this time. They are presumptive nominees for their party. They themselves are not on the ballot, and I will be the only one on the ballot.
Kennedy also told Fox that he has met the second requirement, namely, that each candidate must have received 15% support in at least four separate national polls.
“So I qualify for the debates,” Kennedy concluded.
Background
Trump, himself, has said that he has “no problem” including Kennedy in the debates. With Biden, though, it is a different story.
A report was released last week indicating that Commission on Presidential Debates co-founder Frank Fahrenkopf publicly claimed that Biden’s campaign urged CNN to “promise that they wouldn’t let” Kennedy into the debate.
Fahrenkopf further claimed that this is a potential violation of Federal Election Commission rules and that, therefore, Kennedy could bring a lawsuit.
It is unclear how this is all going to play out.
But, it is looking more and more likely that Kennedy might just make his way to the debate stage.
