A police officer in Washington, D.C., was shot while driving to work on Monday, leading to the detention of two persons of interest in Prince George’s County, Maryland, authorities reported.
The shooting occurred near 7th Street and Oglethorpe Street NW, close to the Fourth District police station at 6001 Georgia Avenue NW. The officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.
The officer, who was in plain clothes and driving a personal vehicle, noticed another driver behaving erratically ahead.
When the erratic driver suddenly stopped, someone exited the vehicle and fired at the officer, who remained in their car.
Despite being injured, the officer managed to note a partial license plate number of the suspect’s vehicle and drove to the Fourth District police station for assistance. The officer was then transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Using the partial license plate, police located the suspect’s vehicle, which crashed during a pursuit in Prince George’s County, Maryland. Two persons of interest were detained.
The injured officer, identified as a captain with 18 years of law enforcement experience, has not been named. Details about the shooting and the detained individuals remain sparse as the investigation continues.
