A judge sentenced activist Lauren Handy to four years and nine months in prison for leading a blockade at an abortion clinic in Washington, D.C., in 2020.
Handy, 30, received her sentence Tuesday after a jury convicted her last year of two charges under the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act (FACE).
She and nine others organized and attended what they described as a “rescue” at the clinic, using chains, bike locks, and ropes to block the clinic entrance, the Washington Examiner reported.
The DOJ requested in a sentencing memorandum that Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly sentence Handy to 6.5 years, while her attorneys requested only one year.
Handy and one of her co-defendants were described by the DOJ as the two “masterminds who chose the clinic, advertised the event, recruited participants, and planned the crime.”
Handy’s attorneys said she intended to lead a peaceful event that involved an “attempt to rescue preborn children from imminent death at the hands of an abortionist who Ms. Handy believed performed illegal lateterm procedures.”
Prosecutors, per the Examiner, highlighted that the protest wasn’t entirely peaceful, as some co-defendants pushed their way into the clinic entrance, causing employees to fall to the ground.
Several participants chained themselves together and used chairs to block the clinic entrance for hours until authorities arrested them.
The news of Handy’s sentencing sparked a firestorm on social media, with X users calling out the blatant double standard on display under Biden’s DOJ with the treatment of pro-life activists compared to pro-abortionists.
“How long did the BLM protesters get burning down building? How about the protesters blocking roads?” quipped Gunter Eageman.
Trending Politics co-owner Collin Rugg replied, “Seems like conservatives get about 5x-10x the punishment as liberals who commit similar crimes.”
“And most of the criminals on the left get by with no punishment at all,” wrote one user, to which another responded, “FACE Act that punishes protestors at abortion clinics was passed with the support of 61 House Republicans and 7 Republican senators in 1994.”
“Democrats know how to protect their interests with many Republicans going along,” they added.
X users also recounted when Biden’s DOJ raided Handy’s home to find the bodies of five nearly full-term infants that had been thrown in the trash at Washington Surgi-Clinic.
They pointed to Cesare Santangelo, the abortionist in charge of the facility, being caught on hidden camera admitting to leaving the living babies to die. Then reflected on how Biden’s DOJ ordered the bodies to be destroyed, thus closing the investigation, despite pressure from Republican lawmakers.
“Judge Kollar-Kotelly has disallowed @LiveAction’s undercover footage of late-term abortionist Cesare Santangelo admitting he would leave a baby to die if it were born alive after a failed abortion,” Lila Rose shared back in 2023.
“5 pro-lifers face 11 years in prison for trying to stop this infanticide,” she added.
Life Action News shared more information two years ago about the dead babies found in Handy’s home, accompanied with the disturbing images.
“I can say with confidence that [four of] these babies died at an age when they were viable, premature people,” neonatal specialist Dr. Robin Pierucci told the outlet.
Physician experts also told Live Action News that the five aborted children recovered were at a stage of development where they could have potentially survived outside the womb.
This raised significant questions about potential legal and ethical violations by the abortion facility, however, Biden’s DOJ never sought to pursue them.
It instead remained committed to locking up Handy for her protest.
“So let me get this straight people who stand up for innocent babies being m*rdered get several years in jail. But pro-Palestinian protesters can take over private property, block roads, and vandalize property but don’t spend a single night in jail. That makes a lot of sense,” remarked RedWave Press on X.
