A history-making pitch for unity from the former president was met with a prop-wielding retort from a rival faction.
“…we’re gonna have a lot of fun.”

Saturday at the Washington Hilton Hotel, former President Donald Trump became the first candidate for a major party to give a speech at the Libertarians’ National Convention. With a backdrop displaying the gathering’s motto to “Become Ungovernable,” the GOP leader addressed a mixed crowd of cheers and jeers.
“A lot of people ask why I came to speak at this Libertarian convention and you know, it’s an interesting question, isn’t it? But we’re gonna have a lot of fun,” began the president in part.
Trump promptly served up a tally to curry favor with attendees as he expressed, “In the last year, I’ve been indicted by the government on 91 different things. So, if I wasn’t a Libertarian before, I sure as hell am a Libertarian now. And unlike Joe Biden, I don’t throw people in jail for disagreeing with me.”
Including promises to name a Libertarian to his cabinet if elected and to commute the sentence of Ross Ulbricht, founder of a darknet marketplace serving a life sentence in prison following his arrest during then-President Barack Obama’s administration, the Republican invited the crowd to, “Only endorse me if you want to win.”
“If you want to lose, don’t do that. Keep getting your 3% every four years,” he suggested referencing the typically limited draw third-party candidates had in November that could have a substantial impact in the head-to-head race between the GOP and the Democratic Party. “United we will be unstoppable. If we unite, we are unstoppable.”
Representing a bigger pull from both sides of the aisle, environmental lawyer and independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was said to have been linked to a somewhat disruptive message for Trump in the former of rubber chickens bearing the message “Debate Bobby.”
“They’re not here to stop him from speaking, but they are here to let him know they feel very strongly that it’s an act of cowardice to avoid debating candidates and giving Americans choices,” said pre-K music instructor Tiffany Cianci to Fox News Digital about the sound-producing rubber fowl handed out by American Values 2024 as debates have only been slated to include Trump and President Joe Biden.
“They say tonight people are going to be squeezing these when Trump is on that stage because they want to take him on, on the debate stage,” reported Fox News’ Alexis McAdams ahead of the president’s speech where the silhouette of the gag birds could be made out held aloft by members of the crowd.

With delegates expected to choose their party’s nominee on Sunday, the Washington Examiner reported candidate Chase Oliver had said, “If he thinks he’s going to win our party’s nomination, he’s more delusional than I thought…If Donald Trump thinks that he can come in here in our house and earn our nomination, he’s got another thing coming.”
Trump had concluded his remarks in his latest outreach to expand the GOP tent by saying in part, “I want to thank you. I want your support, and again, you can either nominate us and put us in the position or give us your votes. I would say nominate or give us your votes. But we want Libertarian votes because you stand for what we stand for.”
