An “ill-advised” endorsement from the former president had local GOP officials encouraging an alternative tipping of the scales.
Less than two weeks remained before Virginians cast their ballots in the Republican primary and former President Donald Trump planted his MAGA stamp of approval on the challenger to incumbent Rep. Bob Good, the chairman of the House Freedom Caucus. Now, as the GOP leader backed retired U.S. Navy SEAL John McGuire and issued a legal notice to Good’s campaign, the 5th District Republican Congressional Committee penned an open letter calling for a change of heart.
“We hope President Trump reconsiders his ill-advised endorsement and stands with the Grassroots America First supporters of Congressman Bob Good,” the group led by chair Rick Buchanan wrote.
Along with describing the lawmaker’s efforts toward advancing Trump administration policies, they wrote, “His unimpeachable conservative voting record in Congress earned him a 100% score from Heritage Action for America, Family Research Council, Americans for Prosperity, Conservative Review, and Numbers USA. In 2023, he was elected chairman of the House Freedom Caucus which is holding the line against corrupt politicians on both sides of the aisle.”
By contrast, they alleged, “the Congressman’s opponent has a history of lying to the voters and only representing his own ambitions rather than the needs of his constituents. In 2023, he repeatedly told voters that he would not run against Congressman Bob Good only to file to run for Congress less than 2 weeks after he was elected to the Virginia Senate and before he was even sworn into office.”
As recently as Monday, the president had taken to Truth Social railing against Good after weighing in on the contest after Memorial Day.
“Bob Good is BAD FOR VIRGINIA, AND BAD FOR THE USA. He turned his back on our incredible movement, and was constantly attacking and fighting me until recently,” wrote Trump, “when he gave a warm and ‘loving’ Endorsement — But really, it was too late. The damage had been done! I just want to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, and the person that can most help me do that is Navy Seal and highly respected State Legislator, John McGuire, a true American Hero.”
“John, who fought the Cartels on the Front Line, and then came home and fought the drug dealers in Virginia, will ALWAYS PUT AMERICA FIRST. I had the safest Border in history, built hundreds of miles of Wall, and then Crooked Joe Biden came along and ruined it, making it one of the worse human catastrophes ever in our Country. John and I will correct this situation, and fast! He is strong on crime, will protect our great Military/Vets, and will always defend our under siege Second Amendment,” he continued. “John McGuire has my Complete and Total Endorsement! MAGA2024.”
The president’s gripe appeared to be rooted in Good’s endorsement of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in the GOP primary before ultimately backing Trump moments after America’s Governor suspended his own campaign.
It was in January that he posted, “It is my privilege to provide my complete and total endorsement for Donald J. Trump as the 47th President of the United States. President Trump was the greatest President my lifetime, and we need him to reinstate the policies that were working so well for America.”

The rift that saw the likes of Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R) slamming Good as a liar for using Trump’s name, for which he had been handed a cease-and-desist letter, and commentator Steve Bannon enthusiastically stumping for the incumbent also had Utah Sen. Mike Lee (R) speaking in favor of the caucus chair.
Lee, an increasingly-present figure on the campaign trail for Trump, said at the end of May, “I wholeheartedly support Bob Good. He’s an exceptionally rare and valuable statesman–one who’s willing [to] fight and sacrifice for the good of our country.”
