A high school senior is challenging a California school district’s decision to expel her for livestreaming a fight.
Her justification, however, has erupted a firestorm online.
Zoey, a former student at Ayala High School in Chino Hills, insists she had no involvement in the altercation and merely filmed the incident.
Daily Mail reported that the district accused the 17-year-old of violating education codes related to cyberbullying, intimidation, harassment, and attempting to cause injury.
She is barred from attending prom and participating in her graduation ceremony as a result, despite having already purchased her dress.
Zoey explained to CBS, “In our generation, you go live to do makeup, to do everything, so it was just going live just to go live.”
“It wasn’t my intent to purposely or try to cause harm to anyone,” she acknowledged. “It was more of an impulsive thing. It was just bad judgment on my part.”
The school board stated in her expulsion letter that Zoey’s presence on campus would pose a continued danger, Daily Mail reported.
Zoey’s mother, who remains unnamed, expressed her distress: “It’s very hurtful to me to hear these things said about her, knowing who she is and the integrity that she has.”
Though the mom admitted the district’s student/parent handbook does outline potential disciplinary actions leading to expulsion, she pointed out a perceived inconsistency: “We did sign the document but so did the other student who got in a fight and he gets to walk.”
Zoey explained to CBS that she remains focused on her future, despite the setback. “I got a substantial academic scholarship — a $19,000 scholarship — to go to a university. I’ll be practicing law after I graduate,” she told the outlet.
She apologized to the board in a bid to return to school and hoped for reconsideration, but she felt her efforts were futile.
She stated, “Everyone was working against me — the whole Chino Valley Unified School District. They knew they wanted to make an example out of me and that’s what they did.”
Zoey must complete her education elsewhere, despite her family having the option to appeal the decision with the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools.
X users weighed in on the impact of social media on behavior as Zoey’s story circulated the internet on Tuesday.
“Expulsion reflects broader societal issue of social media’s impact on personal behavior,” wrote one user.
“That’s what my generation doesn’t isn’t an excuse to be a bad person,” posted another user following the story.
“Just heard my mom in my head saying ‘if your generation jumps off a cliff, you going to jump too.’ Herd Mentality,” added another.
