California News:
Following my article Monday, “NO Climate Crisis’ Says Coalition Of 1,600 Actual Scientists,” which is a fairly self-explanatory title, I received an email from an unhappy reader with this in the subject line:
“I’m wondering why you decided to amplify dangerous and deadly climate emergency denial.”
The article received a great deal of positive reaction from readers, on social media and in the media. People are very happy, relieved, and hopeful knowing that 1,600 real scientists signed that letter to the California Air Resources Board – a dangerous state agency of unelected Governor appointees who are illegally making laws without the Legislature, enlightening them on California’s actual climate with this: “California is in no danger of unusual drought: The annual precipitation in California has fluctuated greatly over the last 150 years, with only a slight decrease.”
It is especially timely with California Gov. Gavin Newsom jetting to the Vatican where he will be speaking at a Summit of mayors and governors tediously covering “the impact of rising temperatures” in local communities, and “climate resilience,” as if he is a climate scientist or climate expert.
I was going to suggest to “Julie Johnston from Canada” to leave a comment on the article, and then thought I might just ignore her insufferable email, and then noticed that she actually left a comment on the article, burnishing her climate cultist credentials. Her article comment is far less inflammatory than her email to me, and Globe readers adroitly took her to task.
Here is her email to me with my reply below.
Dear Katy Grimes,
If you have a moment, could you explain why — in the midst of flooding all over the world (Texas, Brazil, China, Afghanistan, eastern Africa, all at the same time), huge evacuation-causing wildfires already starting up (actually, never going out completely) in the north (24,710 acres burning across western Canada already; Russia, too), killer heatwaves throughout South and Southeast Asia and Mexico, etc. — you would amplify a PR/publicity stunt meant to confuse and disinform your readers about the climate emergency?
Doesn’t a journalist research their sources before publishing a PR piece? (I got a diploma in journalism many moons ago, and I seem to recall that as a first principle.) Did you count how many “actual” CLIMATE scientists signed the CO2 Coalition (a denier group funded by Fossil Fuel (Renewable Energy) interests)? If there are any, their names will be the dirty dozen or so of paid professional “sciencey” climate change deniers. Let me know if you’d like their names. Most of the “famous” ones are physicists, geologists (with the worst being geophysicists, because they mostly work for Fossil Fuel (Renewable Energy) companies) and engineers. I speculate that it’s because they’re fields of science don’t include ecological learning, making them ecologically illiterate by training. Also, there is a lot of Fossil Fuel (Renewable Energy) money to be made by “sciencey” climate change deniers.
People and other animals and our ecosystems around the world are dying every day because climate change deniers (who can’t deny climate change anymore, so they “just” deny the climate emergency) have caused SO MUCH delay in climate action.
If you want your paper to be a political rag, so be it (you noted how these “scientists” suddenly made it very political — oh, and economic; they like to conflate their political and economic worldview with climate science for some unfathomable reason). But your paper hs certainly lost any credibility as a source for climate change information.
You know what? Shame on you. You, too, conflated your paper’s political/economic views with the science of the climate emergency. You made a deadly decision, and you should retract it.

My reply, replete with expert research thanks to the 1,600 actual scientists:
Dear Julie from Canada,
Let me address each of your concerns starting with:
“The flooding all over the world,” “huge evacuation-causing wildfires already starting up,” and “killer heatwaves:”
- there has been a clear declining record of wildfires in the United States since the 1930’s. The 1920’s-1930’s had 5-10 times the current level of wildfires. Actual satellite observations show that the number of wildfires are actually going down – since the 1930’s.
- “Killer Heatwaves” were actually a thing, again in the 1920’s – 1930’s when the temperatures were much hotter, and it is documented. North and South Dakota had recorded temperatures of 120 degrees in the 1930’s.
- Hurricanes and flooding – not so fast. There has been no overall change in hurricanes and flooding in the US in 120 years – other than currently being slightly down. There is no long term trend, according to climate scientists. I’ll even throw in melting ice caps in Antartica since the 1970’s – no increase whatsoever.
“Doesn’t a journalist research their sources before publishing a PR piece?”
- Blah blah blah. You’ll notice that I not only quoted the 1,600 scientists, but for years have interviewed UCLA Dr. James Enstrom and colleagues regarding California’s claims of global warming and climate change.
You disparage the “actual” CLIMATE scientists who signed the CO2 Coalition…
- I expected your climate cultist reaction. You clearly live and die on climate chaos as an undisputed fact. But, we know how this happened. Once academia started receiving funding from the government for “global warming” and “climate change,” academic researchers began applying for the climate funding, and commensurately began to produce “climate speak” in all of their research – to keep the funding coming. The research exploded and spread to other academic departments solely for the funding.
- Thousands of papers have been published including climate change for the funding, creating a “climate change consensus.” Except there is not “settled science in any science.
As for the article being a “PR/publicity stunt,” you really need to learn to read with improved comprehension. The article was anything but a stunt and cited people, data and sources. And the geophysicists you attempt to disparage as working for the oil and gas industry, are academics.
As for the oil and gas industry, let me inform you that your Subaru, Volvo or Prius, snowboard, skis, hiking boots and Birkenstocks are all made from petroleum products, as are your recycling bins, trash cans, heart valves, and plastic frame sunglasses.
You say “People and other animals and our ecosystems around the world are dying every day because climate change deniers.”
- There are a greater number of Polar Bears than ever.
- The Great Barrier Reef reached record levels recently.
And finally, you claim “You, too, conflated your paper’s political/economic views with the science of the climate emergency. You made a deadly decision, and you should retract it.”
- Nope. The “science of the climate emergency” is your first mistake. There is no climate emergency or climate chaos. The past 10,000 years we’ve been in a slightly less cold glacial period, according to these actual climate scientists, who read the data. They tell us in Central Park in New York City, there has been no overall change in temperature since 1940.
The science has been manipulated to benefit students, grad students, academics and government agencies now doing “climate research.”
“Consensus” on climate change has become a form of bullying, intimidation and censorship – which is exactly what Julie from Canada tried to do here. It has been used to bludgeon and attack the character of anyone who questions the very shallow claims. It is a cult completely divorced from science and reality. And the larger problem with these climate change cultists is they lack humility and any ability for self-reflection.
I rest my case.
