Chris Cannon, a Republican who previously represented Utah in the U.S. House of Representatives, has died at the age of 73.Â
Deseret News reports that Cannon died on Wednesday evening. The outlet adds that the former congressman’s death was “unexpected.”
“Chris Cannon . . . died unexpectedly Wednesday evening, his brother Joe Cannon confirmed to the Deseret News,” the outlet reports.
It remains unclear, at the time of this writing, what led to Cannon’s unexpected passing.
Who was Chris Cannon?
Cannon represented Utah’s Third Congressional District, as a Republican, in the U.S. House of Representatives during a stretch from 1997 to 2009. There, he did some memorable things, including participating in the Senate impeachment trial of former President Bill Clinton.
The Daily Caller reports:
The former congressman reportedly served as a member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law. He was one of the House managers who helped with the Senate’s impeachment trial of former President Bill Clinton, the outlet reported.
Cannon’s background was in law, having earned a law degree from Brigham Young University. He also went to Harvard Business School.
Deseret News reports:
Prior to running for Congress, he was an associate solicitor for the Department of the Interior, from 1984-1986. He played a significant role in acquiring Geneva Steel from U.S. Steel.
After leaving Congress, Cannon continued with several business ventures and consulting activities. He, according to reports, was also a family man.
Tributes pouring in
A number of current politicians have taken to social media to pay tribute to Cannon, including Utah Gov. Spencer Cox (R).
Cox wrote:
Abby and I were saddened to learn that Former Congressman Chris Cannon passed yesterday. Congressman Cannon worked hard for the people of Utah, and was a dedicated public servant working on criminal justice, drug policy, regulatory reform and other issues during his time in the House of Representatives. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.
U.S. Rep. Mike Lee (R-UT) is also among those to pay tribute to Cannon.
Lee wrote:

Sharon and I mourn with his wife, Claudia, along with the couple’s children and extended family, all of whom are in our prayers as we who knew him try to come to terms with this heartbreaking news.
