There was so much that happened last year in 2023, and this isn’t all of it, but it’s the last about it from me. Did you know that Nabisco Wafers would have been 100 years old?
Modern DNA told us things we didn’t know about Ludwig Van Beethoven’s health at the end of his life. He died in 1827 at a young 56 years old. When a total of about 10 feet of his hair was examined with DNA testing, researchers found that not only did Beethoven have a genetic predisposition to liver disease but he also suffered from hepatitis B. Even with his stomach issues, it was shown that Beethoven didn’t live with a gluten allergy or a lactose intolerance. How cool is it that we can find out so much inner body information about people with modern DNA?
Nabisco discontinued their famous chocolate wafers and before their 100th birthday, too. These cookies were crispy and slightly bittersweet, perfect in icebox cakes, as they soften thanks to the whipped topping.
An interview with Martin Luther King Jr. turned out to have quotes that were altered. Apparently, Martin Luther King Jr famously criticized Malcom X to the journalist Alex Haley. However, it turns out Haley fabricated some of the quotes from that famous interview and 1965 Playboy article. It was later discovered that Jonathan Eig that there was unedited transcripts that prove Haley took MLK’s words out of context and made up some of the quotes.
A new national monument was designated in 2023, called the Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument in Arizona. Its total of 917,618 acres spread throughout three different sites around the Grand Canyon. It’s great that land is still being protected, even as recently as last year in 2023.
The place where Caesar was stabbed became open to the public. The square wasn’t discovered until thousands of years later, after the dictator Benito Mussolini had parts of Rome raised for archeological digs. It was then later opened to the public in June of 2023.
The cost of an original Bob Ross was revealed in 2023. Although most of Ross’ paintings are owned by Bob Ross, Inc., the artist donated by the artist that hosted The Joy of Painting on PBS from 1984 to 1994. A studio volunteer got the painting at auction for $100 before later selling it to a gallery that sells a lot of Ross’ paintings. The going price is a mere $9.8 million.
For a sci-fi and pretty strange twist, half-human kidneys were grown in pigs in 2023. It all happened in China when scientists grew part-human kidneys in pig embryos. After checking them, they saw that five of the pig embryos had grown kidneys composed of up to 65% human cells. This was a huge step but it’s not practical, not only because any organ implanted into a human cannot contain any pig cells without the body rejecting it but also due to the ethical implications. Did you know this happened last year in 2023?
The tallest poison ivy in the world was discovered in Paris, Ontario in France. Robert Fedrock was out walking on his property when he spotted the huge poison ivy plant. When he measured it, the plant came out to an amazing 68 feet tall or the equivalent of two school buses stacked on top of each other, end to end. During his discovery, Fedrock got a bad case of poison ivy but as of June 2023, he also got the Guinness World Record for the world’s tallest poison ivy.
We learned in 2023 that if you want to live in the home of the former Queen of England, that it’s possible. For a steal of a price, you can live in the house for $2.9 million. The former house of Anne of Cleves went up for sale in June 2023.The five-bedroom, three- bathroom house dates back to 1095 but has most modern amenities including heated floors and an updated kitchen. This was a cool thing to have happened last year in 2023, but would you live in an almost $3 million dollar house that’s on its way to being 1,000 years old?
Scientists successfully built new technology allowing a paralyzed man to walk again. A “digital bridge” between the brain and spinal cord was built to reestablish the broken communication. Not only can the man walk, he can also climb stairs and even “traverse complex terrains,” according to researchers.
