Former Republican Representative Chris Cannon of Utah passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday evening, as reported by multiple outlets, most notably the Deseret News.
Cannon had served in the United States House of Representatives for Utah’s 3rd Congressional District from 1997 to 2009. Before his tenure in Congress, he was an associate solicitor at the Department of the Interior from 1984 to 1986.
Chris Cannon first entered Congress by defeating the Democratic incumbent, Bill Orton, in 1996. His congressional career came to an end when he lost to Jason Chaffetz, who is now a Fox News host, in 2008.
The Utah News Dispatch noted that during his time in Congress, Cannon was a member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law and was also one of the House managers during the Senate’s impeachment trial of former President Bill Clinton.
Following the news of Cannon’s passing, several current and former Utah elected officials have publicly expressed their condolences
Jason Chaffetz posted on X, “Today I heard Congressman Chris Cannon passed away. God bless. I hope we all can thank him for his valiant, patriotic work fighting for the USA. May blessings be with his family.”
Senator Mike Lee also shared his reaction on X, stating, “I’m stunned and saddened by breaking news of the death of my friend, former Congressman Chris Cannon. I will miss his insights, encouragement, and friendship. Sharon and I mourn with his wife, Claudia, along with the couple’s children and extended family, all of whom are in our prayers as we who knew him try to come to terms with this heartbreaking news.”

Joe Hunter, Cannon’s former Chief of Staff, reflected on Cannon’s personality in and out of Congress.
On X, he remarked, “In Congress, Chris Cannon was a fighter – tough and, yes, stubborn. Privately, he was a different guy. He couldn’t walk past a homeless person without digging into his pocket. It took forever to get to lunch or dinner on Capitol Hill. And…he was really funny. RIP my friend.”
