This week, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) defied Donald Trump’s wishes and moved forward with her motion to vacate against Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA).
The measure failed with a vote of 356-43 against.
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) was among those who blocked the measure, but after he cast his vote, he dropped some very serious allegations about why.
Protecting the House
Gaetz believes that if they did follow through with the motion to vacate, with such a slim majority, a handful of Republicans could be bribed to resign their seats.
If not resign, he believed they could be bribed to vote for a Democrat as Speaker, which would be a complete and utter disaster for the GOP.
This was Gaetz’s post on X on his reasoning…
.@mtgreenee made a truthful, compelling case against Mike Johnson.
She should be commended for this work.
I voted to table the motion for one principal reason – with a two seat majority in an election year I believe 2-3 Republicans could be susceptible to bribes to resign or…

As you saw in that post, Gaetz was trying to make sure that in fighting the measure, he did not suffer the wrath of MTG, who has been preaching about a new UniParty in the House that is taking over.
This was the same narrative Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) complained about after the motion failed, posting, “It’s a new paradigm in Congress.
“Nancy Pelosi, and most republicans voted to keep Uniparty Speaker Mike Johnson. These are the eleven, including myself, who voted NOT to save him.”
Gaetz is doing everything he can to keep his seat, as he is now under attack by Speaker Emeritus Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), who has endorsed a candidate to primary Gaetz for his seat.
How Gaetz will fare in that election remains to be seen, but I just don’t believe all this squabbling within the party is helping the GOP’s chances of holding the House in 2024.
As I have stated in previous posts, if Donald Trump wins this election but the GOP loses the House, it will be far worse than what we saw take place from 2018 to 2020.
Minority Leader Jeffries (D-N.Y.) would become the new Speaker, and he would sit on his perch to finish the job against Trump that Pelosi failed to complete.
