Donald Trump’s classified documents case may be over after the judge decided to postpone the trial indefinitely.
The shock ruling from Judge Aileen Cannon is a massive setback for prosecutor Jack Smith, who is desperately pushing to convict Trump before the 2024 election.
Documents case postponed indefinitely
Cannon has long been a target of political attacks, owing to her appointment by Trump and a pattern of rulings that some view as favorable to him.
But the trial is complex, involving multiple defendants and sensitive issues surrounding classified documents.
Smith has admitted that the documents are no longer in the order they were in when the FBI seized them, suggesting exculpatory evidence may have been destroyed.
In a brief ruling, Cannon said that establishing a trial date would be premature and improper, given significant unresolved issues. The case was originally scheduled for May 20.
“The Court therefore vacates the current May 20, 2024, trial date (and associated calendar call), to be reset by separate order following resolution of the matters before the Court, consistent with Defendants’ right to due process and the public’s interest in the fair and efficient administration of justice,” Cannon wrote.
Democrats in despair…
Trump has been charged in four different criminal cases. After Cannon’s ruling, it now appears likely that only one of them, his ongoing “hush money” case, will be decided before the election.
Smith is also pursuing Trump in a separate January 6th case that is also in limbo, pending a Supreme Court review of Trump’s immunity defense.
A day after Cannon’s ruling, Trump’s state case in Georgia over the 2020 election was thrown into doubt by an appeals court agreeing to revisit the disqualification of prosecutor Fani Willis.
The delays have frustrated Democrats, who are eager to convict Trump before the election.
First, the Supreme Court delays Trump’s Jan 6 prosecution.
Then Trump-appointed Judge Cannon postpones his trial in Florida.
Now this in Georgia.
The courts are deliberately delaying justice — and effectively denying it. https://t.co/Pt6p41Km9k

Blowing up in their faces
If Democrats are looking to assign blame, they should look to themselves. Why did they wait until an election year to prosecute Trump not once, but four times?
This ridiculous overreach is finally blowing up in their faces – justly so.
Cannon got this one exactly right. This trial is unprecedented, and she isn’t required to rush through it to meet an arbitrary political timetable.
