Several weeks ago, Donald Trump all but begged members of Congress to come to his aid to help him end these prosecutions.
The MAGA wing of the GOP House has answered the bell.
Now they are putting more pressure on their fellow members of Congress to defund the Special Counsel Jack Smith prosecutions.
Defund Smith
There are now at least three different proposals being put together to defund the Jack Smith investigations.
Leading the way, as we would expect, is Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), who continues to pressure Johnson on this front.
The problem, of course, is that none of these efforts will be successful.
It is a question if they could even get enough support in the House, let alone pass through the Senate and be signed by Joe Biden.
Reps. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and Andy Ogles (R-TN) are also advocating for Jack Smith’s defunding.
Ogles stated, “It’s well past time that Congress uses its power of the purse to tell Jack Smith ‘you’re fired.'”
Basically, these are all Trump allies maneuvering to show Trump their loyalty, as they are all vying for roles inside the Trump administration if Donald Trump winds up getting elected as president again in 2024.
Even if these efforts were successful, the precedent that would be set is not a good one in terms of being able hold congressional investigations in the future.
One party could simply defund the investigation if it thought it would hurt their party, not exactly how Congress was designed to operate.
And I know what most readers are thinking… this is a great idea because the investigations into Donald Trump are unfair.
That may or may not be true, but it doesn’t matter on this particular front because this legislation will never be successful.
Joe Biden has already vetoed numerous bipartisan bills, so what makes anyone think he would sign legislation that came across his desk to help Donald Trump and defund Jack Smith?
The way to beat Democrats is to destroy them in the 2024 election cycle and remove them from power. Otherwise, this is all posturing on the taxpayer dime.
