Brooklyn state senator Kevin Parker has lodged a claim asserting the unconstitutionality of a law that facilitated the advancement of a rape lawsuit against him.
Parker now contends that the Adult Survivors Act, which he once voted for and boasted about, violates constitutional principles, despite his previous support for the legislation.
The New York Post reported that court documents filed this month show that Parker, known for his fiery demeanor, has formally denied the rape accusations leveled against him.
His denial, however, extends beyond personal rebuttals, as he challenges the legality of the very law that enables legal action in such cases.
The now-defunct Adult Survivors Act had granted alleged victims a window to pursue civil litigation against their alleged perpetrators, even if the statute of limitations had expired on their claims, the Post reported.
Parker found himself accused of an alleged attack dating back to 2004, according to a claim filed just under the wire in November 2023.
This accusation came amidst his vocal support of legislation passed in 2021, a fact he highlighted in his denial of the rape charges shortly after they were made public.
“I voted in favor of the [Adult Survivors Act] to ensure all New Yorkers can seek justice and be heard,” Parker asserted, referencing the legislation signed into law by New York Governor Kathy Hochul in May 2022, which expired in November 2023.
“These allegations are absolutely untrue. My work and advocacy will continue,” Parker affirmed.
One accuser, Olga Jean-Baptiste, recounted her experience, alleging that Parker raped her in 2004 while they were collaborating on relief efforts for Haiti.
Hochul has characterized these allegations as “deeply disturbing.”
Efforts to garner a response from Parker’s Senate representative and legal counsel regarding his recent legal maneuverings in the ongoing case yielded no responses, according to sources at the Post.
The outlet further notes that Parker’s history reveals prior encounters with law enforcement.
Parker faced misdemeanor assault charges in 2005 for allegedly striking a traffic officer who issued him a citation.
He subsequently engaged in a confrontation with a Post photographer, damaging the individual’s camera while the latter was capturing images of the politician outside his residence in Flatbush.
Parker was convicted of misdemeanor criminal mischief and mandated to participate in anger-management programs.
Lonnie Hart Jr., who previously acted as Parker’s legal representative in the aforementioned incident, now serves as his defense attorney in the current sexual-assault case.
Social media users swiftly took to X following Parker’s recent comments to blast the state senator for his hypocrisy.
“You could make it up, but people would not believe you,” Viva Frei lamented online.
“Kevin Parker, a New York State senator who voted in favour of the law that extended the statute of limitations for ‘adult survivors’ to sue their alleged abusers, is now being sued. And is now claiming that the law is unconstitutional,” he added.
“You know, the law that was specifically passed to allow psycho Mcgee @ejeancarroll to sue Trump. That law,” he continued.
