House Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) asserted that despite his party’s narrow majority, Democrats wield significant influence in the chamber.
Jeffries emphasized that it is the Democrats who “get things done” when speaking to CBS News’ Norah O’Donnell on 60 Minutes in a Sunday interview.
Jeffries, despite acknowledging the minority status of his party, asserted their effective governance akin to a majority.
He emphasized Democrats’ pivotal role in securing the necessary votes to drive legislative agendas forward, underscoring it as a factual reality.
The Post Millennial (TPM) reported that Jeffries further alleged that certain House Republicans are inclined towards fostering a “dysfunctional” environment, veering towards “extremism.”
Representative Chip Roy (R-TX) dismissed the notion of Jeffries wielding significant control over House proceedings in a response to his claims.
Roy highlighted to TPM the substantial Democrat dominance in recent major bill passages, noting the disparity in party votes.
“While it is utter nonsense that Jeffries runs the House—as evidenced by the work of our committees and the many radical policies they would advance were it so,” he said.
“It is not lost on those of us counting that virtually every major bill passed since Thanksgiving has passed with many more Democrat votes than Republican, and at least three significant measures have been advanced without even a majority of Republicans,” he added.
Representative Ralph Norman (R-SC) conceded Jeffries’ influential role in a statement to TPM. He also expressed discontent with Speaker Mike Johnson’s perceived acquiescence to Democratic demands.
“Well, I’m not going to lie, he essentially is [running the House]. I like Speaker Johnson but he has got to get a backbone. He’s letting them walk all over us. But I disagree—it’s not a dysfunctional GOP majority. We just have different opinions, that doesn’t mean it’s dysfunctional,” Norman told the outlet.
Jeffries addressed Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-GA) proposal to remove Republican Speaker Mike Johnson from his position during the interview, firmly asserting his opposition to it.
Jeffries recalled the Democrats’ collaboration with a faction of rebellious Republicans in 2023 to depose then-Speaker Kevin McCarthy. However, he now emphasizes a different stance, indicating a united front against similar initiatives.
The minority leader stated, “Our view would traditionally be, ‘Let the other side work its own mess out.’ But when that mess starts to impact the ability to do the job on behalf of the American people, then the responsible thing at that moment might be for us to make clear that we will not allow the extremists to throw the Congress and the country into chaos.”
TPM notes that Jeffries hinted at the potential activation of the single-member vacate motion if he were to assume the role of speaker.
TPM added that Greene’s motion to vacate, lodged in March as a protest against a $1.2 trillion spending package for the remainder of fiscal year 2024, garnered significant attention.
The package included substantial allocations for various purposes, notably earmarking funds for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, aid to Israel and Taiwan, among others. It passed with a decisive 286 to 134 vote.
Resist The Mainstream reported last month that House Democrats were slammed for waving the Ukrainian flag in the chamber of the U.S. House of Representatives during a vote to approve $61 billion in aid for the country’s defense.
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) shared a video of the cheering chamber on X. He later claimed the House Sergeant at Arms called and threatened him to take the post down.
The package advanced to the Senate, where it underwent further scrutiny.
Earmarks in the Senate’s version encompassed $368,000 allocated for a podcast at the behest of Senator John Fetterman, $146,000 directed to a health center providing cross-sex hormones, and an allocation of $400,000 to an organization facilitating access to fake breasts and chest binders for minors, TPM highlighted.
