Every election we see the same argument take place…
Should mail-in ballots received after election day be counted?
If the GOP has its way, the answer in 2024 will be no.
Don’t Count Them
On Friday, the Republican National Committee made its move to try to block late ballots from being counted.
Currently, ballots received after election day but that are postmarked by the end of election day are still counted and considered valid.
The problem, of course, is that it takes about a week to ensure all of these ballots have been received and counted to release an election result.
Republicans are contesting this based on the constitutional requirement that election day consists of a single day.
Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Whatley stated, “Nevada’s ballot receipt deadline clearly violates federal law and undermines election integrity in the state.
“Ballots received days after Election Day should not be counted.”
There are currently 19 states that allow ballots to be counted after election day as long as they have been postmarked by the end of election day.
This is usually justified by stating that this makes it easier for people to vote, but that really does not make much sense.
Get the ballots out earlier, and set a deadline, say 14 days before the election, for the ballots to be postmarked.
That would ensure that all ballots are received by election day and can be included in election day totals rather than delaying the results by days or weeks.
Democrats, of course, are already pushing back, with Nevada Democrat Secretary of State Francisco Aguilar stating, “I hope the Republican National Committee is putting as much time and energy into educating voters on how to participate in elections as they put into suing the state of Nevada.”
