Manhattan’s Democrat District Attorney Alvin Bragg thought he had the deck completely stacked in his favor in Donald Trump’s criminal trial.
But Bragg’s case is imploding before his very eyes.
And Alvin Bragg got some bad news about this key witness.
Bragg called Keith Davidson – a Los Angeles-based attorney who represented both Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal – to the witness stand.
Davidson discussed he how negotiated payment deals of $150,000 to McDougal from the National Enquirer and $130,000 to Daniels from Michael Cohen.
But as has been par for the course in the case, Bragg’s presentation proved underwhelming.
Davidson’s turn on the stand proved so disastrous that former New York Assistant Attorney General Adam Pollock and MSNBC legal analyst Catherine Christian both said Davidson’s testimony worked to Donald Trump’s advantage even though he was Bragg’s witness.
Pollock called Davidson a “difficult” witness because he dealt in the world of tabloid journalism where outlets often paid for stories for multiple reasons.
“This is a messy trial, and sort of gives us all an insight, a crack into what this sordid world is about between the National Enquirer and selling stories. It’s not pretty to watch,” Pollock added.
Enquirer publisher David Pecker testified that his magazine purchased a story of affair allegations against former Obama chief of staff Rahm Emanuel.
Pecker said he had a long-standing relationship with Rahm’s brother, Ari – a Hollywood super-agent – and that he bought the story of Rahm Emanuel’s alleged affair to suppress it after a meeting with Ari.
This is the world Davidson dealt in and told a similar story of how he negotiated the deal between the Enquirer and McDougal after she alleged an affair with Trump.
Christian went on, even saying Davidson’s testimony made it seem like Trump was the victim of extortion.
Davidson represented women who made allegations against actor Charlie Sheen.
Davidson also helped shop a sex tape involving WWE icon Hulk Hogan.
“He was helpful in that he established that there was a payoff and he negotiated with Michael Cohen, but he was helpful to the defense because he has, particularly since the prosecution didn’t bring out some of his bad acts on their direct examination, he appears to be in the defense view, just a lawyer who shakes down people, whether it was Hulk Hogan or other people,” Christian stated.
Christian told MSNBC viewers that Davidson’s testimony showed that Trump got caught up in the world of celebrity allegations and tabloid journalism where accusers and publishers sell and buy stories as a matter of course and to have leverage over the target.
“That’s what he did and maybe that’s what happened here. That’s what the defense will say. This was a shake down of Donald Trump. This wasn’t about paying someone as an illegal campaign contribution. This was a shake down, and Michael Cohen, it’s an understatement to say how difficult of a witness he is for the prosecution,” Christian concluded.
Bragg keeps running up against one brick wall.
That’s the simple fact as not one witness can present direct evidence that Donald Trump committed a crime for the simple reason that Trump committed no crimes and the charges he’s facing would insult farces to label them a farce.
