A Westchester County corrections sergeant is currently under investigation following a “racist and offensive” social media post targeting Georgia jail guards.
The post in question depicts a group photo of members of the Georgia Department of Corrections, with most individuals being black and some appearing overweight.
X users have swiftly come to the sergeant’s defense, saying the post isn’t racist.
The photo posted by Sgt. Michael Bourhill reads, “They must serve some good biscuits and gravy at the Georgia Department of Corrections,” to which he supplied the added caption, “Damn!!”
One account defended Bourhill, writing, “NY Sgt. Michael Bourhill is under an active investigation for posting this meme. He did nothing wrong.”
End Wokeness echoed the same sentiment on X.
A Westchester County black corrections officer group characterized the post as racist.
“The Westchester Correction Association unequivocally condemns the racist and offensive social media post shared by a Westchester Correction Sergeant,” they said.
“Sharing this post is not only unprofessional and inappropriate for any law enforcement supervisor, but also deeply racist and demeaning,” the group emphasized on Facebook. “To merely share such a post is offensive to this supervisor’s colleagues and co-workers.”
“Regardless if the post implies that Black people eat a lot of biscuits or references the weight of some of the officers in the photo, such posts have no place in our society, let alone within the ranks of law enforcement,” they continued at another point in the statement.
“ .. we have consistently addressed the issue of the double standard in disciplining white officers compared to Black officers within the Westchester County Department of Corrections. The fact that a sergeant feels emboldened to share such a post raises serious concerns about his attitudes towards the Black officers under his command,” it added.
Another X user chimed in to blast the group for its outcry.
“So you agree that,” they started, listing off, “Your employees can’t have the free speech (only fat Marxist dictators need apply)” and, “Being physically fit is NOT a requirement for a corrections job, and physical ability cannot be considered.”
The account continued, posting, “P.S. When a riot occurs or a strong prisoner physically resists, even if DOCorrections officers COULD subdue him while being that obese, who’s going to bend over to cuff a prisoners’ hands behind their back? How do officers subdue violent prisoners when they can’t bend to the ground or reach around for their arms w/ a fat belly in the way?”
County officials became aware of the post last week, prompting an immediate probe into the matter, the New York Post reported.
“Last week the Department of Corrections became aware of an inappropriate social media post and launched a formal investigation,” Catherine Cioffi, the county’s communications director, said.
“Posting or reposting inappropriate images is a violation of Westchester County employee policy,” Cioffi stated in an email, adding that those found in breach of this policy would face formal disciplinary charges.
The association urged county officials “to take immediate steps” to address the incident.
Bourhill and the corrections supervisors union, which advocates for him, remained unresponsive to the Post’s request for comment on Wednesday, despite the outlet’s attempts to reach out.
A spokesperson for the Georgia Department of Corrections also failed to respond to a request for comment.
