After painting a target on her own back, South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R) assured donors that the flack for her canine controversy was “a good thing.”
Unlike her willingness to put down a 14-month-old farm dog via firearm and include it in her forthcoming book as an anecdote, Noem was unprepared to let the story die Saturday at an event in Florida. As she joined other GOP figures and politicians for a private donor retreat, audio obtained by Politico revealed how the governor spun the ongoing backlash from gravel pit-gate as making her “stronger.”
“Listen, going through hard things, and I’ve been through a few of them — I’m going through one right now — I mean they’re just attacking me like crazy right now,” she was heard saying during a “breakfast conversation” alongside North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum. “But listen, that’s a good thing.”
“It’s a good thing because it makes you stronger, and it teaches you really what you’re up against, and it makes you recognize how much they lie, how much they will twist, how much they will manipulate. And you just have to be strong and be happy warriors,” contended Noem.
What the governor boasted made her stronger wasn’t necessarily beneficial as the Washington Examiner indicated that the controversy stemming from an excerpt used to promote her forthcoming book, “No Going Back: The Truth on What’s Wrong with Politics and How We Move Forward,” had led to the cancelation of a different fundraiser.
Colorado’s Jefferson County Republican Party was slated to host Noem with “no prior knowledge of the contents of the book,” according to their chairwoman Nancy Pallozzi, but had to cancel the event anyway after “numerous threats” were made as a result of the executive’s recounting of shooting a second-hand dog that was said to have slaughtered a neighbor’s chickens and even gone after her.
Noem could also see an advancement opportunity lost by the wayside after insiders had told Rolling Stone that former President Donald Trump was “disgusted” to hear about the story prompting him to ask, “Why would she do that?” and “What is wrong with her?”

Despite that report, Noem was still present at Saturday’s fundraising event at the president’s Palm Beach, Florida resort home, Mar-a-Lago where, in addition to Burgum, a slew of potential running mates for the GOP leader appeared including Sens. Tim Scott (SC), Marco Rubio (FL), Marsha Blackburn (TN) and J.D. Vance (OH), as well as Reps. Elise Stefanik (NY), Byron Donalds (FL) and Wesley Hunt (TX).
Additionally, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy attended the soiree where they appeared on stage with the president while Noem remained out of the picture.
On a picture-perfect Palm Beach Saturday, in the Grand Ballroom of the Mar-a-Lago Club, more than 400 seated guests enjoyed a gourmet lunch while hearing Mr. Vivek Ramaswamy, Congressman Byron Donalds, and Congressman Wesley Hunt deliver remarks as part of the pre-program.
