Rep. Jerry Nadler explained on Saturday why so many Democrats are sticking up for embattled Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson.
As previously reported, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene is currently trying to oust Johnson with a “motion to vacate” because of his decision last month to move forward with a gigantic foreign aid package jampacked with money for Ukraine.

But the “motion to vacate” is extremely likely to fail if and when it comes up for a vote because virtually the entire Democrat Party, save for a few outcasts, has vowed to vote for Johnson.
Speaking on MSNBC this Saturday, Nadler said that, while he doesn’t expect Greene to actually go through with a vote, if she does go through with it, Democrats will vote for Johnson because he did the “right thing.”
Listen:
“I suspect that she won’t actually carry through on the threat,” he said. “But we are right that if she does, we should save him. Because as much as we disagree with him on everything, almost everything, we can’t permit him to be punished for doing the right thing – voting for the Ukraine aid, which is what they want to punish him for.”
So Johnson did the “right thing” by making America effectively beholden to Ukraine and its losing battle against Russia.
The remarks came four days after House Democrat leaders released a joint statement vowing to back Johnson.
“From the very beginning of this Congress, House Democrats have put people over politics and found bipartisan common ground with traditional Republicans in order to deliver real results,” the statement read.
“At this moment, upon completion of our national security work, the time has come to turn the page on this chapter of Pro-Putin Republican obstruction. We will vote to table Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Motion to Vacate the Chair. If she invokes the motion, it will not succeed,” it continued.

Meanwhile, a report emerged Saturday that an increasing number of Senate Republicans have begun calling for Greene to back off.
“It’s a horrible idea,” Sen. Roger Marshall told The Hill in regard to Greene’s planned motion. “Moses could not do a better job than what Mike Johnson is doing right now.”
“I think he’s doing the very best possible [job] in the situation with a slim majority where the Democrats control the Senate and the White House. There’s not a more conservative person over there that can be elected Speaker than Mike Johnson is,” Marshall added.
Sen. Ted Cruz concurred, saying, “I think it is utterly ridiculous and counterproductive.”
Then there’s Sen. Mike Braun, who told The Hill that Greene’s obsession with ousting Johnson could hurt the GOP agenda.
And there’s Sen. Thom Tillis, who last month bashed Greene as “uninformed” and a “total waste of time.”
“She is a horrible leader,” he told CNN at the time. “She is dragging our brand down. She, not the Democrats, are the biggest risk to us getting back to a majority.”
Dovetailing back to the House, Republican Rep. Anna Paulina Luna views things differently. Like Greene, she shares criticism of Johnson. But unlike Greene, she sees the bigger picture.
“The Uniparty has prioritized foreign interests again and placed America last,” she told Newsweek. “Speaker Johnson has gone back on most of what he said when we elected him to be Speaker, rendering him almost unrecognizable as a legislator and the leader we chose.”
“That being said, the possibility of a Democratic-controlled House poses a greater risk. We stand as the last barrier that has stopped Biden from completely ruining our country. Given our historically narrow majority, we must not allow the gavel to pass to the Democrats,” she added.
Johnson has for his part warned that his ouster could threaten the GOP’s majority.
“I don’t think that would be helpful to us from a political standpoint for the Republican Party to continue to govern, maintain and keep our majority in November,” he said. “I think that would have been a great hindrance to it. And so, that wouldn’t be helpful. Nor does a motion to vacate help us in that regard, either. It would be chaos in the House.”
