Sadiq Khan has won a third term as the Mayor of London in a decisive victory, securing 43.7% of the vote and outperforming his Conservative challenger, Susan Hall, by approximately 11 percentage points.
This victory extends Khan’s governance, which began in 2016, marking a continued preference for Labour leadership in the capital amidst a broader affirmation of the party across England.
The recent local elections have significantly bolstered the Labour Party’s standing, setting a robust foundation for the upcoming general election.
Labour’s success in these elections saw them gaining control of eight councils and unseating nearly 500 Conservative councilors, a likely consequence of the “Zero Seats” initiative by right-wing Tories which sought to undermine their own party’s electoral prospects in order to make a statement about the party’s moderate leadership.
Labour leader Keir Starmer, speaking to reporters, did not mince words about the implications of these results for the Conservative Party.
“I am sorry, I don’t care which political party you support, if you leave your country in a worse state than when you found it 14 years later, you do not deserve to be in Government for a moment longer,” Starmer said, according to CNN.
Despite the losses, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s position appears to remain secure for the time being, with no immediate challenges to his leadership from within his party. The Conservatives managed to retain control of the mayoral position in the West Midlands and the Tees Valley, offering some consolation amid widespread electoral setbacks.
The elections also highlighted issues that could influence future political strategies. Notably, Labour’s stance on international matters, particularly the conflict in Gaza, impacted its support in regions with significant Muslim populations. The loss of Oldham Council, where Muslims make up about a quarter of the population, was a significant blow to Labour, underscoring the complex dynamics of domestic policies and international positions.
Yvette Cooper, Labour’s shadow Home Secretary, acknowledged these challenges in her statement to the BBC. “We do recognize the strength of feeling that there is and of course we will continue to work just as we do in every area across the country to earn votes back in future,” Cooper said.
Sadiq Khan has served as the Mayor of London since May 2016, becoming the first Muslim to hold this office in a major Western capital. During his tenure, Khan has focused on several key areas including transportation, housing, and security. He introduced the “Hopper” fare which allows unlimited bus and tram journeys within an hour for a fixed price, and he has expanded the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) to help combat air pollution. Khan has also been involved in increasing the affordability of housing in London, launching schemes aimed at helping first-time buyers and renters. His policies on policing have included increasing the number of police officers on London’s streets to address safety and crime, particularly knife crime, which has been a significant issue during his time in office. However, critics allege that these measures have been insufficiently robust to address the problem.
