Check the labels if you recently bought ground beef from Walmart.
The Department of Agriculture issued a “High-Class 1-” alert on Wednesday warning that over 16,000 pounds of meat shipped to retailers nationwide is being recalled due to concerns of E. coli contamination.
Cargill Meat Solutions issued the recall and it was found in several products produced between April 26-27. USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service is concerned that some packages could be in refrigerators and freezers.
The recall alert includes a list of the recalled products, as well as their labels. Consumers who find any of the products they purchased should return them or throw them away.
E. coli bacteria are found in food, the environment, and the intestines. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, most strains of E. coli are harmless. However, some strains can cause people to become sick or even die.
Most foodborne outbreaks are associated with E. coli which produces Shiga toxin (STEC).
FSIS warns that consuming E. coli may cause dehydration and bloody diarrhea, as well as abdominal cramps. Most people recover in a week, but some may develop kidney failure. Young children and older adults are most susceptible to this condition.
The recall announced Wednesday is distinct from the alert issued last week for possible E.coli contamination in more than a dozen ground beef products produced by Greater Omaha Packing Co.
