President Joe Biden, on Thursday, firmly rejected calls from student protesters to adjust his approach toward the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
In remarks reported by The Associated Press (AP), the only Silent Generation President of the United States of America emphasized that “order must prevail” amid the tumult on college campuses nationwide, marked by a surge in violence, outrage, and fear.
“Dissent is essential for democracy,” Biden said at the White House, per the AP. “But dissent must never lead to disorder.”
The Democratic president’s statements came after days of silence on the escalating protests, and amid growing criticism from Republicans attempting to utilize the unrest as a strategic point in political campaigns. Biden’s remarks, striving for balance, advocated for law and order while also defending the right to free speech amidst his reelection campaign.
Student protests have erupted at various college campuses in response to the Israel-Hamas war, initiated by April’s arrests of demonstrators at Columbia University. Students are protesting the death toll of the war and are urging universities to dissociate from companies supporting Israel’s military actions in Gaza.
Biden, addressing the concerns head-on, stated directly that the protests would not sway his policies. When asked if the demonstrations might prompt a change in his stance, Biden simply responded, “no.”
He expressed his disapproval of deploying the National Guard to campuses, a measure some Republicans have suggested, which resonates with the tragic historical context of the Kent State shootings in 1970. Biden articulated a rejection of using the current situation to “score political points” and described it as a “moment for clarity.”
“There’s the right to protest, but not the right to cause chaos,” Biden remarked before a trip to North Carolina, per the AP. “People have the right to get an education, the right to get a degree, the right to walk across campus safely without fear of being attacked.”
The protests have led to significant tension, with students refusing to dismantle encampments and administrators resorting to police intervention, which has escalated to clashes drawing national attention.
Pro-Palestine student activists recently clashed with New York Police Department officers during a raid at Columbia University, an action requested by Columbia University President Minouche Shafik. This incident further highlights the intense confrontations on educational campuses.
Despite the tension, Biden is scheduled to visit a college campus soon. He will deliver the commencement address at Morehouse University in Atlanta on May 19.
The new remarks constitute a turning point for the Biden administration, which heretofore has remained silent about the protests which are bringing chaos to American universities.
On Wednesday, President Biden made an unrelated post to the official X account of the President of the United States, featuring a cursive graphic declaring “Mental health is health” and the signature of the 46th President of the United States of America.

“It’s simple,” was Biden’s pithy caption to this graphic.
The post was widely ridiculed by users of social media throughout the political spectrum, who saw it as avoiding the elephant in the room at a time when campus protests were reaching a fever pitch and the war in Gaza continued to rage unabated.
“[S]tudents are being arrested for protesting genocide and the president is tweeting graphics [I] would’ve reblogged on tumblr when [I] was 14,” X user Britt (@hadyoubigtime) posted in response to President Biden’s post.
