Handing Hamas a win, Ivy League schools announced a decision on campus protests that showed their willingness to negotiate with terrorists.
Even as campus chaos spread to an increasing number of colleges and universities, and administrations recognized that large swaths of astroturf activists were not affiliated with their schools, a desire to turn down the heat came in the act of capitulation.
Belying a reputation as some of the best and the brightest, Brown University President Christina Paxson announced Tuesday that an agreement had been struck with the leaders of the anti-Israel encampment to clear out and maintain civility in exchange for a divestment vote.
A release from the Rhode Island Ivy League institution included Paxson’s letter to the community bending the knee to the keffiyeh-clad rabble-rousers with all the hallmarks of politically correct prostration.
“…the devastation and loss of life in the Middle East has prompted many to call for meaningful change, while also raising real issues about how best to accomplish this. Brown has always prided itself on resolving differences through dialog, debate and listening to each other,” wrote the president in part.
“I cannot condone the encampment, which was in violation of University policies. Also, I have been concerned about the escalation in inflammatory rhetoric that we have seen recently and the increase in tensions at campuses across the country. I appreciate the sincere efforts on the part of our students to take steps to prevent further escalation,” she continued.
Those efforts were detailed as a planned meeting between five members of the Corporation of Brown University and five student leaders from the Brown Divest Coalition that they could express their wishes toward “divestment from the Israeli occupation of Palestinian Territory.”
With the activists calling for Brown’s endowment to divest from “companies enabling and profiting from the genocide in Gaza,” Paxson agreed to seek a recommendation from the Advisory Committee on University Resources Management by Sept. 30, in time for the matter to be brought to a vote at the October meeting.
In exchange, the terrorist sympathizing campus occupiers agreed to take down their tents by 5 p.m. Tuesday and stay within the code of conduct through the end of the semester, for commencement and Reunion Weekend, leading their compliance to factor into decisions over previous violations.
Of course, the activist claimed victory and posted as much on social media, “VICTORY!! BROWN COMMITS TO DIVESTMENT VOTE! Brown administration has conceded to students’ demand that the Corporation vote on divestment after years of tireless pressure from the student body, 61 student arrests, an eight day hunger strike and seven days of encampment.”

Brown wasn’t alone in seeking to placate those protesting as Columbia University President Minouche Shafik had released a statement Monday that read in part, “While the University will not divest from Israel, the University offered to develop an expedited timeline for review of new proposals from the students by the Advisory Committee for Socially Responsible Investing, the body that considers divestment matters. The University also offered to publish a process for students to access a list of Columbia’s direct investment holdings, and to increase the frequency of updates to that list of holdings.”
The decision to even consider the whims of the disruptors was met with scorn on social media as simply a “dumb idea” that would be “inviting more…in the future.”
This is a dumb idea because it doesn’t actually solve anything. If Brown votes to divest, then they’re rewarding this behavior and inviting more of it in the future. If they vote not to, these attention-whores will just do it again because they got off scot-free the first time.
