John Earle Sullivan, the man who filmed the fatal shooting of Air Force veteran Ashli Babbitt during the January 6 riots, has learned his fate.
The 29-year-old man from Utah has been sentenced:
Thirty-six months of supervised release and $2,000 in restitution.
The man from Salt Lake City claims he was acting as a citizen journalist when he climbed inside America’s Capitol and filmed portions of the famous riot.
For his actions, Sullivan was charged with felony obstruction of an official proceeding and civil disorder.
Despite claiming to be acting as a citizen journalist, Sullivan’s garb that day would indicate that he definitely anticipated some trouble. He was wearing a ballistic vest and a was reportedly recorded on video screaming things like “we’re about to burn this s–t down!,” and “we’re f–king s–t up” and “I’m gonna make these Trump supporters f–k all this s–t up,” according to court documents.
In the videos he filmed, Sullivan told the mob that he had a knife and offered it to the rioters as he filmed them trying to break open the doors to the House Chamber and the Speaker’s lobby.
Congress members were inside the House of Representatives at the time.
More video evidence showed Sullivan climbing through a broken window at the Capitol building and eventually reaching the Speaker’s Lobby.
There, Sullivan yelled at police officers to “go home.”
A few moments later, Ashli Babbitt was shot and killed.
It’s hard to tell EXACTLY how much Sullivan should be held responsible for, but there appears to be little doubt that he was at least involved with the day that many call one of the darkest in our nation’s history.
Do you think that he deserved a harsher sentence, a lighter one, or was the decision about right?
