America’s Republicans politicians seem to mostly support the First Amendment, but even they aren’t about it all of the time.
For example, these Republicans are trying to tell their opposition when and where they can protest.
They’re trying to save the Republican National Convention.
Republican lawmakers aren’t quite framing it as a breach of the protestors’ First Amendment, instead, they are framing their request to prohibit protests outside the Republican National Convention as a safety measure.
MSN.com is reporting that “the Republican National Committee is requesting that the agency move the protest zone from the nearby city park a quarter-mile from the arena due to security concerns for event attendees.”
An attorney for the Republican National Committee, Rod Steggerda, wrote a letter to the Secret Service complaining that the current protest zone set up at the event “will force thousands of peaceful attendees and demonstrators, who may otherwise choose to avoid or limit direct, proximate engagement with one another, to be in extremely close, consistent, and unavoidable proximity.”
Republicans want there to be free speech, just not where it could negatively impact them.
Instead of allowing any protests to be held near the Republican National Convention, the GOP wants to force protestors to be at least a half mile away from the building, according to a person familiar with the circumstances.
The Republican National Convention is being held in Milwaukee.
Milwaukee’s chief of staff, Nick DeSiato, said that the city is “facing significant pushback from protesters who want to be closer to the convention.”
He also told people who to blame, saying that the security perimeter is “exclusively established by the Secret Service.”
What do you think?
Should the Secret Service cave to the GOP and make adjustments to protestor’s First Amendment rights?
