On Friday evening, former President Donald Trump launched a tirade on social media against independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr, saying a vote for him is nothing more than a “wasted protest vote,” and that he’d “take Biden over Junior.”
Kennedy was initially a concern for the Democratic Party, as he was seen to be siphoning voters away from President Joe Biden. However, he has recently become increasingly concerning for the Republican Party as well, as recent polls have shown him beginning to pull votes away from Trump, Politico reported.
In a lengthy string of posts on Truth Social, Trump referred to RFK Jr. as a “Democrat ‘Plant’” who was intended to help Biden’s reelection campaign, pointing out Kennedy’s more left-leaning stances.
“RFK Jr. is a Democrat ‘Plant,’ a Radical Left Liberal who’s been put in place in order to help Crooked Joe Biden, the Worst President in the History of the United States, get Re-Elected,” Trump wrote. “A Vote for Junior’ would essentially be a WASTED PROTEST VOTE, that could swing either way, but would only swing against the Democrats if Republicans knew the true story about him. Junior’ is totally Anti-Gun, an Extreme Environmentalist who makes the Green New Scammers look Conservative, a Big Time Taxer and Open Border Advocate, and Anti-Military/Vet…”
Kennedy’s policy has representation from both sides of the aisle, but the independent candidate and former environmental lawyer has repeatedly called for a permanent ban on natural gas exports, and has called to reevaluate our methods of protecting the environment.
His stance on environmental issues, detailed on his website, as well as his other left-leaning stances, have long suggested that he would be a threat to Biden in 2024, with concerns from Democrats that he would be primarily siphoning from their voterbase.
However, Kennedy’s repeated questioning of the COVID-19 vaccine’s efficacy and safety, as well as his focus on the southern border, have begun to earn him sway from the Republican party as well.
An NBC poll released recently suggested that he is evenly pulling from both Trump and Biden, pulling 13% in the poll, leaving Trump at 37% and Biden at 35%.
Another poll, from Quinnipiac, released on Wednesday, shows Kennedy’s support at 16%, while Trump and Biden are tied at 37%. The poll reveals that more Republican voters find RFK Jr. favorable than Democrats. 44% of Republican voters held a favorable view of Kennedy, while only 11% of Democrats did so.
Both Trump and Biden have worked to distance themselves from Kennedy, with Biden releasing an ad which included other members of the Kennedy family endorsing him, and the Trump campaign shutting down RFK’s claims that Trump had approached him to join his presidential ticket.
