With the ongoing trial against former president Donald Trump in New York, a recent survey found that only 13 percent of Americans believed that he was being treated the same as criminal defendants.
The bogus hush money trial began on Monday. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg accused Trump of falsifying business records to reimburse his then-lawyer Michael Cohen, who allegedly paid adult film star Stormy Daniels.
Trump vehemently denied any relationship or sexual encounter with Daniels.
A CNN poll noted that people are unsure whether he is treated more harshly (34 percent) or leniently (34 percent) than other defendants.
Moreover, 56 percent of the respondents doubt that there will be a fair outcome in the trial.
Despite these attacks, Americans believe that Trump is still fit to run the country despite his conviction.
About 3/4 of Trump supporters remarked that they would still support the former president even if he is convicted.
Meanwhile, those Trump supporters who commented that they might reconsider their support if the former president faced conviction (12%) maintained that they would not vote for the current president.
With his current trial in New York, most Americans feel at least that the former president acted unethically, but the majority believe that his actions were not criminal.
Overall, about half of the population say that they are following updates on the trial very closely or somewhat closely.
The CNN poll was conducted from April 18 to 23.
Additionally, an earlier poll held by the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research shows that only one in three Americans thinks Trump acted illegally in the ongoing hush money trial.
Respondents are also skeptical that the former president is getting fair treatment from the prosecutors. They also doubt if the judge and jurors can be impartial.
With the entire charges against him, only 3 out of 10 Americans believe that prosecutors are treating the former president fairly. And only 2 out of 10 Americans trust that judges and jurors can be fair and impartial to Trump.
One respondent, Christopher Ruff, remarked, “It’s very obvious political persecution.”
“I’m no fan of Trump in any way, shape, or form. Didn’t vote for him; I never will. But it’s obviously all political.”
The AP-NORC poll found that only 35 percent of Americans believe that Trump did something illegal regarding the hush money accusations.
Moreover, only 3 in 10 think he did something unethical without breaking the law.
