The mystery surrounding the discovery of a rat’s foot in a toddler’s mouth has finally been revealed.
News.com.au reported on the perplexing tale, which unfolded on March 22, writing that a startled mother in New Zealand was shocked to find her young son chewing on a rat’s foot.
The incident unfolded after the child had been served Pak’nSave garlic bread.
The mother promptly notified the company upon the discovery of the foot, leading to an immediate nationwide recall.
Shannon Bellman, a resident of Te Awamutu south of Hamilton on New Zealand’s North Island, recounted the alarming incident to the New Zealand Herald, revealing that she had extracted the rodent’s foot from her 10-month-old son’s mouth during a meal.
“I saw this poking out of his mouth and grabbed it, I couldn’t believe it,” Ms. Bellman recounted, expressing her shock.
She further disclosed to the outlet that her son, who has a weakened immune system, experienced stomach discomfort following the ordeal.
She stated that Pak’nSave didn’t take the incident seriously until images of the rat’s foot appeared on Facebook. However, the company later called her to apologize.
The bread in question had been purchased from a Pak’nSave outlet in Te Awamutu, which had received its supply from the wholesale distributor French Bakery based in Christchurch.
A New Zealand Food Safety regulator soon disclosed that the foot likely originated from the complainant’s home, ultimately shifting the narrative.
The regulator’s probe found that the rat’s foot was found to be in a raw state, indicating that it was not cooked during the manufacturing process. The garlic bread had undergone two rounds of cooking — first during its production and subsequently in the home of the consumer.
The probe asserted that as a result it was highly improbable for the foot to have been introduced into the product within the commercial supply chain.
Vincent Arbuckle, deputy director-general of New Zealand Food Safety, emphasized, “We thoroughly investigated the complaint and can now rule out the manufacturer, distributor, distribution centre, and retailer as possible sources of the foot.”
The investigation concluded that the source of the rat foot was “most likely” the home of the complainant.
Arbuckle further emphasized that the complaint had been lodged in good faith. The regulatory body highlighted that the manufacturer adhered to rigorous safety protocols.
News.com.au highlighted that since 2016 the New Zealand government has embarked on a significant endeavor to eradicate rats from its islands, aiming to achieve a rat-free status by 2050.
RNZ reported nearly eight years ago that then-Prime Minister John Key announced the government’s aim to achieve a predator-free status, emphasizing that rats, possums, and stoats are responsible for killing 25 million native birds annually.
He also shared that pests pose a significant threat to the economy and primary sector, amounting to a total cost of $3.3 billion yearly.
Key said, “This is the most ambitious conservation project attempted anywhere in the world, but we believe if we all work together as a country we can achieve it.”
