Joe Biden has started being escorted by aides during his walking routine out to Marine One, possibly to dispel concerns about his age, according to Axios.
Some of the president’s aides have voiced worries that when Biden walks unaccompanied to Marine One on the South Lawn, it highlights his age, given the scrutiny he faces for his “halting and stiff gait” at 81 years old, sources told Axios.
To mitigate the frequency of “videos of Biden walking and shuffling alone,” the president has often been accompanied by aides — an adjustment that was proposed by aides after Biden expressed a desire for a less formal approach, according to a White House official.
According to Axios, Biden walked to and from Marine One and the White House five times in March. During these walks, he was either alone or with his family members. However, as of April 16th, he had been accompanied by aides or other lawmakers nine times out of the ten times he had made the walk.
After the modification to the president’s routine, advisers anticipate aides will persist in accompanying the president, as they believe that images of Biden walking have been more favorable for his image, Axios reported.
After special counsel Robert Hur’s report on Biden’s handling of classified documents, concerns about Biden’s age were heightened. Hur, while opting not to pursue charges against Biden, contended that a potential jury might perceive Biden as “a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”
During a visit to a Pennsylvania war memorial, Biden recounted a story about his uncle, Second Lt. Ambrose J. Finnegan Jr., suggesting that he was shot down over “New Guinea” during World War II and never recovered because of the presence of “cannibals” in the area. However, this narrative does not align with the official military record of the incident, raising questions about the president’s accuracy.
The president also appeared to read a stage direction off the teleprompter when giving a speech at North America’s Building Trade Union National Legislative Conference.
“Folks, imagine what we could do next,” Biden said while discussing his economic accomplishments, adding the word “pause.”
