U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson, fresh from supporting a massive foreign aid package on behalf of Ukraine and Israel, visited Columbia University on Wednesday to speak against the massive pro-Palestine demonstrations which have taken over the campus of New York’s Ivy League campus.
“Things have gotten so out of control that the school has canceled in-person classes, and now they’ve come up with this hybrid model, where they will discriminate against Jewish students,” he said, as reported by The Guardian. “They are not allowed to come to class any more for fear of their lives. And it’s detestable, as Columbia has allowed these lawless agitators and radicals to take over.”
“Sadly, Columbia’s administrators have chosen to let the threats, fear, and the intimidation of the mob to overtake American principles like free speech and the free exchange of ideas and the free exercise of religion. They have co-opted First Amendment arguments to protect genocide and to elevate the voices of antisemitism,” Johnson said.
They’ve proven themselves to be incapable of achieving their basic responsibility, which is keeping students safe,” Johnson continued. “We just can’t allow this kind of hatred and antisemitism to flourish on our campuses, and it must be stopped in its tracks. Those who are perpetrating its violence should be arrested, I’m here today joining my colleagues and calling on President [Minouche] Shafik to resign if she cannot immediately bring order to this chaos.”
“As Speaker of the House I am committing today that the Congress will not be silent as Jewish students are expected to run for their lives [and] stay home from their classes, hiding in fear,” Johnson added.
The chaos on campus ensues from an earlier and smaller demonstration at Columbia University, from which resulted in over 100 arrests and numerous disciplinary actions from the university. Among those arrested, most famously, was Isra Hirsi, daughter of U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar and a staunch opponent of Israeli foreign policy.
Earlier Thursday, Hirsi said she was among several students suspended from Columbia University for participating in pro-Palestinian protests—a development that emerged a day after her mother and other members of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce grilled the school’s president about growing antisemitism on the campus.
