A juvenile bottlenose dolphin was found shot to death on a Louisiana beach last month.
An animal autopsy found multiple bullets in the animal’s body, including the brain, spinal cord, and heart, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said.
NOAA said a member of the public reported the animal stranded to the Southeast Marine Mammal Stranding Hotline, which contacted Audubon Aquarium Rescue. The aquarium recovered the body.
The agency has offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to identification, prosecution, and arrest of the whoever is responsible for killing the dolphin.
The Marine Mammal Protection Act provides punishments of up to $100,000 in fines and up to 1 year in jail.
