Every time Donald Trump walks into a courtroom these days, he gets a gag order slapped on him.
Trump, of course, is not helping the situation by constantly posting rants on his Truth Social account.
Retired California Superior Court Judge LaDoris Cordell is now saying that she thinks Trump’s actions have already warranted a stint behind bars.
Gag Orders
After the first gag order was issued by Judge Engoron, it gave the green light to slap Trump with a gag order in every case.
Let’s not forget, Trump had already been sued by E. Jean Carroll for defamation, a case he lost, so this was to be expected in Trump’s other cases.
Trump violated the gag order in the Engoron case several times, facing fines and finally being warned that he would wind up in jail.
Now that the Bragg case is in court, Judge Merchan granted Bragg’s request for another gag order, which Trump appeared to have violated immediately with yet another post.
Even I had stated that it almost seemed like Trump was daring these judges to toss him in jail so he could play the victim card.
Judge Cordell was asked about that very scenario, responding, “I think that is irrelevant. It doesn’t matter.”
She explained, “Some people say he will go to jail and he will be a martyr. It doesn’t matter. There are two purposes of contempt.
“One is to punish and one is to deter future behavior. The fine will not deter, but incarceration will. The question is, will the judge do it?
“If I were the trial judge I would impose jail time. I would stay it meaning you’re not going to jail right now, because that would delay the trial, which is what Donald Trump and his people want.
“I would stay at, meaning I will sentence you to whatever time I find appropriate and I will impose that at the end of the trial, maybe while the jurors are deliberating. There is nothing to prevent the judge from doing that.”
Something tells me that Cordell’s prediction will come true sooner rather than later.
Merchan does not like Trump, and he comes off as a no-nonsense guy, so I am not sure how much leeway he will give Trump on his gag order, especially after he torched Trump’s attorney during a recent gag order hearing.
There is a question, however… if Trump goes to jail, what happens to his Secret Service protection?
