Biden stopped prosecuting illegals during COVID and just let it drop off further each year in comparison to either the Obama or Trump administration.
In 2018, 84,000 illegals were charged with entering the U.S., a misdemeanor. Between the three years 2021 – 2023, just 11,000 were charged. This is Department of Justice data. If you cross the border, are deported and cross again, it’s a felony.
COVID messed a lot of things up
In 2019, 27,000 people were charged. In 2023 that number dropped to about half that, or 14,000. Illegal crossing have skyrocketed, making the contrast worse.
Civil deportation proceedings have replaced criminal charges even with the repeat offenders. This contradicts Biden’s claim that he needs more authority from Congress to help with the border. Criminal cases all but stopped April 2020 when the country closed for COVID.
Just a month prior
In March 2020, 4,000 illegals were charged and 2,000 were met with felony entry. In April those numbers were a fraction, 671 and 960. Criminal cases during the lockdown period were all but non existent. There were 13 in December.
When Joe Biden took office, COVID receded but the prosecutions never returned. The most recent month with any data was December 2023.
At that time only 708 people were charged with illegal entry with 1,236 receiving charges of felony reentry. That’s a fraction in comparison to December of 2018 when the two numbers were 7,000 and 2,000.
COVID was a convenient excuse
The Trump administration was the peak of enforcement. June 2018 those two numbers were 9,500 and 2,237. Border apprehensions actually went down. That means deterrents were working. In contrast, current enforcement is way down so border crossings are at an all time high.
It’s not just Republican vs. Democrat administrations. Biden is more lenient than Obama, both are Democrat. Detailed data can only be tracked to 2019, but annual statistics can go back further.
This shows more serious immigration crimes are lower during the Biden administration than any year since at least 2009. Neither the Homeland Security Department nor the Justice Department commented.
