Former U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard recalled the “increasingly crazy” Democratic Party she left behind and revealed her one-word response if she is asked to be Donald Trump’s running mate.
The former representative for Hawaii’s 2nd congressional district served until 2021 and announced she was leaving the party to become independent the following year. She spoke with BlazeTV host Dave Rubin about her disillusionment with Democrats and whether she would consider running for vice president alongside Trump.
“If that call came I would say yes,” Gabbard responded to Rubin’s question, adding that she would be “honored” to serve the country in that way. The former congresswoman also served in the Hawaii Army National Guard and was deployed to Iraq in 2004.
She emphasized the importance of winning the election in November and stopping the “Democrat elite” from destroying the country while noting the need to get the U.S. “back on track” by putting in place “people of courage in our government who care more about the country than they do about the political elite in Washington, and actually rooting out the deep rot that exists within our bureaucracies, the administrative state, the deep state in Washington.”
Earlier in the interview, Gabbard recalled how she had many friends from both sides of the political aisle when she served in Congress, noting that both Democrat and Republican friends attended her wedding. However, her experience after leaving the party has felt like a kind of “freedom.”
This, she pointed out, has been an escape from a party that “constantly was filled with purity tests,” moving goalposts “based on whatever issue was the cause of the day or whoever had the pulpit on any given day” and was “becoming increasingly crazy.”
She recounted how Republicans reached out for her to campaign on issues while “not a single person” from the Democrat Party asked. She “absolutely would have” helped out if even one “common-sense-minded Democrat” had asked.
Gabbard, who ran as a Democrat in the 2020 presidential primary before dropping out and endorsing Joe Biden, had previously said independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr asked her to be his running mate.
“I met with Kennedy several times, and we have become good friends.” she reportedly said in a statement, “He asked if I would be his running mate. After careful consideration, I respectfully declined.”
I left the Democrat Party and its elitist cabal of woke warmongers behind…and am urging independent-minded Democrats who love our country and cherish peace and freedom to join me.

“The party I joined over 20 years ago no longer exists today,” Gabbard says in an excerpt from her new book, “For Love of Country: Leave the Democrat Party Behind.”
“I could no longer remain in today’s Democratic Party, which is now under the complete control of an elitist cabal of warmongers fueled by cowardly wokeness who divide us by racializing every issue and stoke anti-White racism, actively work to undermine our God-given freedoms enshrined in our Constitution, are hostile to people of faith and spirituality, demonize the police and protect criminals at the expense of law-abiding Americans, allow our borders to remain open while claiming they are ‘secure,’ weaponize the national security state to go after political opponents, and, above all, drag us closer to nuclear war with each passing day,” Gabbard writes.
“I left the Democratic Party and became an Independent. For the sake of our country, peace, freedom and our hope for a prosperous future, I urge you to do the same,” she adds.
