Gaetz Says He Will Move To Nominate Trump As Next House Speaker If GOP Wins In 2022

Representative Matt Gaetz says he will move to nominate Donald Trump as the next Speaker should Republicans win back the House in 2022.

Gaetz says he’s gone so far as to discuss the matter with the former President.

When asked by a reporter if he’d like to see Trump as Speaker, Gaetz responded, “I would.”

Pressed further on if he’s discussed it with him he added, “I have.”

The Florida congressman though said he likes to keep “conversations with the former president between the two of us.”

Speaker Trump

Gaetz (R-FL), a staunch ally of Trump, has suggested in the past that the former President be selected for the role of House Speaker.

Gaetz sent out fundraising appeals over the summer which told donors, ”how great it will feel when … we make our next Speaker of the House Donald J. Trump.”

He committed to such a move at a rally in July.

“After the next election cycle when we take back the House of Representatives, when we send Nancy Pelosi back to the filth of San Francisco, my commitment to you is that my vote for speaker of the US House of Representatives will go to Donald J. Trump,” he said.

Not Very Likely

While the move is possible, it seems rather unlikely that former President Trump would have any interest in filling the role currently held by Nancy Pelosi should Republicans win back the House.

The role has never been filled by anyone outside the chamber but the Constitution does not specifically state that the Speaker must be a House member. Anyone chosen by the House can serve as Speaker.

A representative for Trump has said he has “zero desire” to be named Speaker of the House despite previous comments suggesting he’d look into it.

In an interview with conservative radio host Wayne Allen Root, Trump toyed with the idea saying “it’s very interesting.”

Jason Miller, the former president’s outgoing spokesman and longtime aide, however, said Trump “has zero desire to be Speaker” not long afterward.

Following initial talk of the possibility, Representative Brendan Boyle (D-PA) introduced a bill that would only allow sitting House members to serve as Speaker.

“The Speaker of the U.S. House is second in the United States presidential line of succession,” Boyle said in a statement.

“That Donald Trump’s name would even be tossed around as a potential speaker in the people’s house, should serve as an alarm bell that our current requirements need to be amended in the name of protecting our nation and our democracy,” he continued.

Democrats earlier this year introduced a bill that would ban the former President from being buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

That bill has 13 Democrat co-sponsors.

Representative Andy Biggs (R-AZ) at the time said the bill is proof that “Trump lives rent-free in the heads of Democrats.”

“If it weren’t so tragic, it would be hilarious,” he added.

Imagine how apoplectic they would be if they had to answer to Trump as House Speaker.
