My journey to pro-life activism started when I heard a song called “Silent Scream” by the Christian hardcore band The Crucified in 1987. This week, a new generation of pro-life activists found inspiration when the band’s drummer, Jim Chaffin, sent a message encouraging campers to continue standing up for Christ and for the unborn.
The occasion was the 28th annual pro-life boot camp for youth co-sponsored by Priests for Life’s youth outreach, Stand True, and organized by the Survivors of the Abortion Holocaust. I’ve been part of the camp for many years. Priests for Life has been working collaboratively with Survivors for nearly 30 years, and for the last 15 years I’ve led the Youth Outreach and street activism work of Priests for Life.
The camp also has been something of a family affair for me, with three of my seven kids having completed the activist training several years ago.
This week has been busy. We protested outside the Washington Surgi-Clinic, where abortionist Cesare Santangelo performs abortions into the third trimester. His abortion business, located near the campus of George Washington University, will be one of the sites to which Priests for Life will bring national attention in the coming months through our Late Term Abortion project. Santagelo may be guilty of violating federal law prohibiting partial birth abortion.

A 2020 protest there led to the conviction and imprisonment of several peaceful pro-lifers. All have been pardoned by President Trump. But the killing continues.
Campers also drew pro-life messages in chalk on the sidewalks surrounding George Washington, handed out literature on the National Mall and did man-on-the-street interviews with passersby. Outside the office of the Department of Health and Human Services, we called for an investigation into the abortion drug mifepristone, something Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has vowed to do.
The campers were among just a few pro-life groups outside the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday, the third anniversary of the decision that overturned Roe v. Wade. I was surprised there weren’t more of us out there, but even more surprised that the pro-aborts weren’t out in force. Maybe the “heat dome” kept them home.
This week we also will take part in the Face the Truth Tour organized annually by longtime activist Jack Ames and his organization, Defend Life. This multi-generational effort sends people out on the streets in Maryland – which has no limits on abortion – to show graphic images of abortion victims.
As Priests for Life National Director Frank Pavone has said for decades, America will not reject abortion until America sees abortion. These photos break hearts and change minds. Father Denis Wilde, OSA, one of our fulltime pastoral associates at Priests for Life, has taken part in numerous Face the Truth Tours.
“With this boots-on-the-ground training in pro-life activism, we aim to educate and activate these already passionate youth to return home on fire with the love of Jesus and the stamina they need to battle the culture of death on a daily basis,” said Tim Clement, Survivors’ outreach director who is leading his second boot camp.
One of the reasons I look forward to taking part in the camp every year is because I know that the kids are learning valuable information and tactics, and the energy they put off inspires me to work harder and more faithfully to bring an end to this abortion holocaust.
