In a decision that defied common sense, CNN quietly rehired its former “Reliable Sources” host Brian Stelter in September 2024 as “chief media analyst,” barely two years after showing him the door for what many critics agreed was an indefensible track record of bias and misinformation.
Once dismissed in August 2022 under then-CEO Chris Licht’s short-lived effort to return the network to journalistic integrity, Stelter’s return is being viewed as a clear signal: the experiment with objectivity at CNN is over.
And predictably, it didn’t take long for Stelter to prove the critics right.
In the immediate aftermath of the tragic shootings in Minnesota—where former DFL House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed, and Senator John Hoffman and his wife wounded—Stelter took to the airwaves to float speculative narratives about the killer’s motives.
At a time when facts remain sparse and investigators have yet to determine a motive, Stelter was quick to point the finger toward what he implied was a climate of violence fostered by conservative rhetoric.
But what “direction,” exactly? At the time of his commentary, Vance Luther Boelter, the suspect, was still at large. Early findings suggest his political background was muddled, not clearly aligned to any party or ideology. Despite this, Stelter alluded to political connections that hadn’t been established—once again rushing to frame events through a partisan lens.
The backlash was swift. Media analyst Joe Concha of Fox News lambasted Stelter’s commentary, calling it a blatant return to the spin-heavy style that got him removed from the airwaves in the first place. Stephen L. Miller, a respected critic (not to be confused with the Trump advisor), also chimed in, highlighting the larger media ecosystem’s habit of exploiting tragedy before the facts are known.
The Stelter commentary echoed the recent firing of ABC’s Terry Moran, who launched unprovoked attacks against Stephen Miller (the Trump advisor) in a move so extreme that even his own network had to act. The media, it seems, is increasingly willing to discard any semblance of restraint in pursuit of ideological narrative.
CNN, once branding itself as “the most trusted name in news,” has continued to erode its credibility by returning to the same tactics and voices that alienated viewers and journalists alike. For a brief moment during Chris Licht’s tenure, there appeared to be a shift toward balance—an acknowledgment that journalism should be rooted in facts, not faction.
But Stelter’s return and immediate dive into unverified insinuation signals a reversion to form. It’s not just about one man’s commentary—it’s a symptom of a network that no longer even pretends to value objectivity.
