Spanish police reported on Thursday that Liverpool and Portugal soccer star Diogo Jota and his brother were killed in a car crash in Spain.
Jota, 28, and his brother André Silva, 25, died in the accident near Zamora, Spain, close to the Portuguese border. The crash occurred shortly after midnight, and police confirmed no other vehicles were involved.
Jota’s Lamborghini was found off the road in flames, prompting firefighters to intervene to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby vegetation.
The Spanish Civil Guard stated that the driver likely lost control of the vehicle due to a tire blowout, causing the crash.
The tragedy comes just weeks after Jota married his wife, Rute Cardoso. Jota is also survived by three children, one of whom was born last year.
“Yes to forever,” Jota wrote in a social media post celebrating their wedding. Diogo Jota, a forward for Liverpool Football Club since joining in 2020, made 182 appearances for the team.
“Liverpool Football Club is devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota,” the club said in a statement. “Liverpool FC will make no further comment at this time and requests that the privacy of Diogo and André’s family, friends, teammates, and club staff be respected as they try to come to terms with this unimaginable loss. We will continue to provide them with our full support.”
Jota began his professional career in Portugal with Paços de Ferreira and earned 49 international caps for the Portuguese national team.
The Portuguese Football Federation expressed their grief in a statement: “The entire Portuguese football community is devastated by the deaths of Diogo Jota and André Silva in Spain this morning.”
“Diogo Jota was not only an exceptional player with nearly 50 caps for the national team but also an extraordinary person, respected by teammates and opponents alike. His contagious joy made him a role model in his community,” the federation added.
Jota’s Portugal teammate, Cristiano Ronaldo, shared his condolences on social media.
“It doesn’t make sense. We were just together with the national team, and you had just gotten married,” Ronaldo wrote in Portuguese. “To your family, your wife, and your children, I send my condolences and wish them strength. I know you will always be with them. Rest in peace, Diogo and André. We will all miss you.”
