The British Royal Family recently suffered another heartbreaking tragedy that involved an extended member of the monarchial line and has now resulted in altered living arrangements for some of the grief-stricken mourners.
Lady Gabriella Windsor has reportedly moved back in with her parents, the Prince and Princess of Kent, following the tragic death by suicide in February of her husband, Thomas Kingston, according to the U.K. Mirror.
Ella, as she is typically known, no longer wanted to live in the home she previously shared with Kingston, whom she married in a royal wedding in 2019 at Windsor Castle, while her concerned noble parents wanted to keep their grieving daughter close by as she continues to deal with the untimely loss of her beloved.
Moving back in with her parents
The Daily Mail reported that Lady Gabriella, 43, had lived in a Notting Hill home with Kingston, 45, after they were wed nearly five years ago, but has now returned to Kensington Palace to live with her parents, Prince and Princess Michael of Kent.
An unnamed friend of the mourning widow told a reporter for the outlet, “They wanted Ella to be with them, and she didn’t want to be alone in the home she shared with Tom.”
“All of us are rallying ’round and she’s going to be OK,” the anonymous source added.
Kingston died of a self-inflicted “traumatic wound to the head”
People Magazine reported in March that Kingston, a financier at Davenport Capital who previously served as a hostage negotiator in Iraq, died by way of suicide in his parents’ Cotswolds home on February 25.
According to an inquest conducted by the senior coroner of Gloucestershire, Katy Skerrett, Kingston had eaten a Sunday afternoon lunch with his parents before disappearing elsewhere on the property while his father took the family dogs for a walk.
“On his return, Mr. Kingston was not in the house,” the report stated, and following a frantic half-hour search, the father “forced entry on a locked outbuilding when no reply could be gained. His father found Mr Kingston deceased, with a catastrophic head injury. A gun was present at the scene. The emergency services were called and the police are satisfied that the death is not suspicious.”
The report concluded that “The cause of death given was traumatic wound to the head,” and the inquest was formally closed.
Royal Family grieves the terrible loss
Two days after that death, according to People, a joint statement was released by Lady Gabriella along with Kingston’s parents and siblings that said, “It is with the deepest sorrow that we announce the death of Thomas Kingston, our beloved husband, son, and brother. Tom was an exceptional man who lit up the lives of all who knew him. His death has come as a great shock to the whole family, and we ask you to respect our privacy as we mourn his passing.”
Buckingham Palace also issued a statement that said, “The King and The Queen have been informed of Thomas’s death and join Prince and Princess Michael of Kent and all those who knew him in grieving a much-loved member of the family. In particular, Their Majesties send their most heartfelt thoughts and prayers to Gabriella and to all the Kingston family.”
The outlet further noted that Lady Gabriella is ranked 56th in the line of royal succession, and though she is not considered to be a “working member” of the Royal Family, the freelance journalist is nonetheless frequently involved in various Royal Family events.
Her father, Prince Michael, was a first cousin of the late Queen Elizabeth II, which makes Ella a second cousin of King Charles III, as both are great-grandchildren of the late King George V, according to the Daily Mail.
