Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell on Monday night claimed on social media that the United States is not looking to enter a war with Iran and will retain its “defensive posture” in the region, even as President Donald Trump summons his National Security Council.
Trump, who spent the day in Canada for the G-7 summit, will return to the White House on Monday evening as tensions appear to escalate in the Middle East. Israel launched a preemptive strike on Iranian nuclear facilities last week.
The president also called for an evacuation of Tehran earlier in the evening, but did not provide any justification for the call. However, he also claimed that “America First” means a non-nuclear Iran.
“American Forces are maintaining their defensive posture & that has not changed,” Parnell posted to X. “We will protect American troops & our interests.”
Parnell also reposted the White House’s rejection of an alleged news report indicating the United States is attacking Iran.
The developments come as the president is also calling for his National Security Council to gather in the Situation Room Monday night, according to Fox News.
