COLUMBUS, OH – A Fourth of July celebration turned tragic when gunfire erupted at a party hosted in a short-term rental on the city’s south side. The shooting, which occurred early Tuesday morning, left one juvenile dead and five others injured.
The incident unfolded around 2:30 a.m. on Wilson Avenue, where approximately 250 people had gathered. Authorities are still searching for the suspect responsible for the violence.
Earl Jones, who was hired as security for the event, described the atmosphere as initially festive until an unanticipated crowd arrived, leading to chaos. Jones mentioned that despite a thorough security check, some individuals were allowed to bypass the screening process at the host’s request.
“The host instructed us to let certain people in without checks,” Jones explained. This decision proved costly when shots rang out both inside and outside the residence.
Witnesses initially mistook the gunfire for fireworks, but panic ensued as the reality set in. Jones recounted trying to assist the wounded, though tragically, one young victim succumbed to their injuries. Three others were hospitalized, and all are expected to recover.
“This day, meant for celebrating freedom, turned into a nightmare for a young life lost,” Jones lamented, noting the increasing prevalence of firearms among youth. He recalled a troubling encounter with a teenager attempting to smuggle a gun into the party.
Columbus police continue to investigate and urge anyone with information to come forward. They emphasize the importance of parental vigilance and the dangers of resolving conflicts with violence.
Authorities have yet to identify the deceased juvenile. Tips can be submitted anonymously through Central Ohio Crime Stoppers or directly to the Columbus Police homicide unit.
