A severely burned body was discovered Saturday morning by a hiker at Stone Mountain, a frequently visited Georgia landmark.
According to Fox 5, the hiker called 911 after finding the body near the top of the mountain in a remote area not commonly accessed by visitors. The body was located near the cable cars that transport guests to and from the mountain’s summit.
“The body was under a rock overhang, and someone had piled up rocks in front of it to make it very private,” said John Bankhead of the Stone Mountain Park Police Department. “It’s a number of rocks that you commonly see around this area of the mountain. It’s not in an area where hikers usually go. It’s out of the way—people don’t know it’s there.”
Bankhead called the scene “one of the weirdest” he has ever seen and described it as “unusual.”
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is assisting with the case.
The DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to help determine the person’s identity and cause of death.
The investigation remains active. Authorities are asking anyone with information about the incident—or the person who reported the discovery—to contact them.
