Lawmakers in Tennessee are seeking to penalize parents who allow their kids to be subjected to “gender transition” medical procedures.
On Thursday, the state Senate passed SB 2782 by a 25-4 vote, advancing it to the Republican-controlled House where it’s expected to receive additional support from conservatives.
The bill would make it a Class C felony for any “adult who recruits, harbors, or transports an unemancipated minor” in the state, “for the purpose of receiving a prohibited medical procedure that is for the purpose of enabling the minor to identify with, or live as, a purported identity inconsistent with the minor’s sex or treating purported discomfort or distress from a discordance between the minor’s sex and asserted identity, regardless of where the medical procedure is to be procured.”

If it goes on to become law, adults found to be in violation could be subjected to three to fifteen years in prison as well as fines up to $10,000.
SB 2782 additionally “authorizes a person who violates this amendment to be held liable in a civil action for such violation.”
“This is an absolutely horrifying development in Tennessee. The law could lead to felony charges against any adult who provides information about gender affirming care to transgender teens if they don’t have parental permission,” Allison Chapman, an LGBTQ legislative researcher told the far-left website Truthout.
“The threat of this law could result in activists and advocates like myself refusing to talk to transgender teens within Tennessee in fear of being arrested on a felony,” Chapman said.
The bill was sponsored by Republican state Sen. Janice Bowling who didn’t engage in debate on the floor but read from the text of SB 2782 when asked to clarify its contents by Sen. Heidi Campbell, a Democrat.
Campbell contended that kids who are afflicted with gender dysphoria “find that their parents are people that they can talk to.”
“While I absolutely applaud efforts to support parental rights, I also think we need to think about the different scenarios in which relationships with parents are not necessarily healthy,” she said,” according to Fox News.
The bill is similar to another passed this week that would make it illegal for adults to assist minors in getting abortions, an issue that is very near and dear to the hearts of Democrats who are hoping that stoking fervor over the right to kill the unborn will trump inflation as the number one priority for voters this November.

“We’ve had two bills in two days regulate the types of conversations people can have with each other,” Tennessee state Senator Jeff Yarbro – a Democrat – said before the vote. “We shouldn’t be trying to violate constitutional rights, and that’s what this is trying to do.”
“We’ve decided abortion is only available to save the life of the mother,” Republican state Sen. Paul Rose said. “Unless the parents approve, you cannot take a minor across state lines to get an abortion.”
There are no two greater organizing principles for the modern Democratic Party than abortion and child genital mutilation surgery and they will likely put up a ferocious fight against such laws.
