Former New York Republican Rep. George Santos made headlines late last year when he was expelled from Congress following a slew of federal charges.
While Santos announced plans to once again run for office, Fox News reported this week that his campaign has come to an end.Â
Santos points to antisemitism among Democrats
According to the network, Santos revealed his decision to drop his congressional bid in a post on X, the social media platform previously known as Twitter.
“I have decided to withdraw from my independent run for NY-1. I don’t want my run to be portrayed as a reprisal against Nick Lalota,” Santos wrote on Tuesday.

“Although Nick and I don’t have the same voting record and I remain critical of his abysmal record, I don’t want to split the ticket and be responsible for handing the house to Dems,” the former congressman continued.
“It is clear that with the rise of antisemitism in our country we cannot afford to hand the house to Democrats as they have a very large issue with antisemitism in their ranks,” he declared.
“It’s only goodbye for now, I’ll be back”
“The future holds countless possibilities and I am ready, willing and able to step up to the plate and go fight for my country at any time,” Santos continued.
“I will continue to participate in the public policy discussions and will do my part,” he wrote before adding, “I will always strive to stand on the right side of history. It’s only goodbye for now, I’ll be back.”
Santos’ problems began in late 2022 shortly after he was elected, after media reports revealed that much of his career and life story had been fabricated.
“I didn’t graduate from any institution of higher learning. I’m embarrassed and sorry for having embellished my résumé,” Fox News quoted him as saying.
Santos is facing multiple felony charges
His situation grew worse when the Department of Justice brought multiple felony charges against him in October of 2023.
“As alleged, Santos is charged with stealing people’s identities and making charges on his own donors’ credit cards without their authorization, lying to the FEC and, by extension, the public about the financial state of his campaign,” United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York Breon Peace said in a press release.
