Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has been a polarizing figure for as long as I have been covering politics.
He is widely considered an obstructionist by Democrats, but he has little favor among Republicans, especially since Donald Trump first ran for president.
This has led to a steady decline for McConnell in polling, with Trump now dwarfing McConnell in approval rating.
Going the Wrong Way
In the most recent Morning Consult poll, McConnell did not perform very well.
The Senate Minority Leader garnered only 33% approval, compared to Donald Trump, who had a 76% approval rating.
Trump’s unfavorable rating was only 17%, compared to McConnell’s 44%.
McConnell has had an unfavorable rating since I can remember, yet Republican voters in Kentucky appear to love him, as he has been in office since 1985, last winning an election in 2020, where he beat Democrat Amy Grath, winning 57.76% of the vote.
There were some thoughts that McConnell may step down with Donald Trump winning the presidential nomination, but McConnell has vowed to serve his full term while he has announced that he will finally step down from his leadership position after the election.
McConnell recently stated, “I’m not leaving the Senate.
“I’m particularly involved in actually fighting back against the isolationist movement in my own party. …And the symbol of that lately is, ‘Are we gonna help Ukraine or not?’”
Since McConnell has been serving in Senate leadership, the national debt has increased by about $30 trillion.
He has also overseen some major wins by Democrats, which included Obamacare and the increase in illegal immigration into this country.
I, for one, will pop a cork on McConnell’s last day, but we still have to avoid the very real possibility that a McConnell disciple will win the leadership position after he leaves his post.
We will find out if our elected Senators follow the desires of We the People or if they are there to serve their own agendas soon enough.
My guess here is that the outcome of the 2024 presidential election will significantly impact who wins the leadership position at the start of the next congressional session.
